Dog Owner Charged With Neglect For Not Taking Injured Puppy To Vet

A Columbus woman says she did the best she could with her injured puppy.

Nicole Supik, 27, says she had no idea the medical attention she was giving her dog Rex was actually hurting him.

Supik says Rex was stolen from her East Maynard property, then returned, but was severely injured.

"I noticed that his paw was broken and that he had bite wounds on his neck and face and his ear, and that his left paw was broken," said Supick.

Humane agents first got a call about the injured dog nearly two weeks ago, and they said they twice instructed Supick to take Rex to a veterinarian for an x-ray.

Supick said could not afford the medical bills and thought a homemade splint and Children's Tylenol would help the animal.

Dr. Emily Walz was the first to examine Rex and said the splint was actually delaying his recovery.

"My concern is with a history of having that leg splinted, they splinted down too low on the leg and most likely, when he stepped on that spot he accidentally opened that fracture spot again,” said Walz.

Supick surrendered Rex and says she should have taken him to a doctor right away.

Agents say Supick will be charged with animal neglect this week and that should serve as a warning to others.

"To do nothing or treat the animal yourself and increase the pain and suffering is inexcusable," said Kerry Manion, chief agent of the Capitol Area Humane Society.

Humane agents notified her TWICE?! After the first time they notified her and seen she still didn't get the dog help, they should've done something... Poor puppy. :(
