Cleaning a thermos

i just got an old picnic set.does anyone know how to clean a thermos and not leave a taste (soapy or what have u)?

Baking soda, and cream of tartar, hot water,overnight.

Is it a metal one or plastic?  Usually hot water will clean it minus soap,  you can add lemon juice or vinegar for added boost.

Do you mean to: clean the 'gunk' out of the bottom of the thermos? To do that, hot soapy water (not too much soap) and a couple of table spoons of rice.  NOT instant ice. Put it all in the thermos, put the lid on, and SHAKE WELL.Rinse, well.  Get rid of the 'gunk' and probably the odor will go too.
