I want to splurge with my first "paycheck"... sandbox???

Well, I'm still excited about being able to earn money from home and spending my first "paycheck".  I'm looking to buy my girls a sand box for outside. I've been looking over the ones on Amazon and there seem to be a lot of different ones, so I'm not sure which to get.

My girls are 11 months and 2 and half.  We don't need a pool side since we already have a pool.

I do have two cats and there are some neighborhood cats that roam around, so it needs to be able to be covered when not in use.

Any ideas? Do you have one? like it? what do you have?

Or have any other ideas for an outside fun thing? We already have kid horseshoes, pool, bikes, chalk, etc.

How about a swing set that can grow with them?  I am not a fan of the sandbox idea since that can draw all sorts of things to it even ticks, ants and spiders which can slip in between cracks of the lid.

I had a turtle one as a kid that covered with it's shell, I'm pretty sure they still sell them at walmart and target.

Honestly, their interest in the sandbox is usually pretty short lived.  Most kids are over it by 5 at the most.  You can accomplish the same thing with a long, shallow rubbermaid type tote (the underbed kind works great) for way cheaper and the lid will attach securely.  Then save your money toward a swing/playset that they will use longer.  And when they outgrow the sandtable, you have a rubbermaid tub to use for other things like toys in the garage.

If you do go with a sandbox, dump a big container of cinnamon in with the sand to help deter ants and other bugs.

My husband built a sandbox for my daughter. The lid opens up into a bench.
