Can I use Swiss chard in place of kale in soup?

I'm making a chicken curry and coconut milk soup that has carrots, garlic, onion, mushroom and kale. Except I'm out of kale. I have Swiss chard but it smells really bitter. I've never cooked with Swiss chard before. Will it ruin my soup?

Swiss chard is bitter.  I would just leave it out or saute a little real well on the side and add a little to taste how it all goes together

Thanks, I left it out. My soup turned out really good, I just miss the kale.

I use swiss chard in pasta all the time. I've never used it in a soup. It doesn't taste too bitter when sauteed with a little grape seed or olive oil.

The soup sounds delicious. Glad it worked out for you :)

That's where I typically use it too. I think the acidity of the tomatoes really helps mellow the taste a little.
