School Day Bed Times?

What time do you think is an appropriate bed time for elementary age kids? My boys are 8 and 6 and go to need between 8 and 830 during the week. My baby sister had told me (and my kids) that I'm mean for making them go to bed that early. Her 9 year old step daughter and 4 year old son stay up until 930 most nights, and its not uncommon for it to be closer to 1030. I'm not asking what to do about my sister, she is a brat and that's pretty much all there is to it. But it did make me curious about other moms bedtime opinions.

I have a 12 yr old who goes to bed at 8, my 10 yr old goes to bed at 730 and my 6 yr old goes to bed at 730. If they dont get at least 12 hrs my kids are HORRIBLE

My dd is starting Kinder this year.  She is almost six.  I will be hard pressed to get her to bed before 9:30 or ten.  She fights sleep like crazy, always has.  I'm hoping that when it starts to get dark earlier, that will help.

What time do they have to be up?  I would aim for 10-12 hrs of sleep a night for them.  DD lays down about 8pm but usually will not fall asleep until 9 or 9:30pm esp. if her brother is over on mondays.

9:00 for my 5 year old. She doesn't get up until 7:30 (school starts at 9:15). That gives her about 10 hours which is what she's used to.

My kids go to bed at 11:30 most nights all year. Unless they get into a lot of trouble that day.

This.  There is a lot of research on the importance of sleep at this age and the reality is most kids don't get enough.

I am a teacher and I can tell you way too many kids hit a wall at some point during the day.  Even if they don't actually fall asleep, they do the totally dazed out in their chair thing.  It's usually in the afternoons.

My DS (10) has to get up at 6:15.  I shoot for 8:30 as bedtime, but it often ends up being 9:00.  That's about 9.5 hours and I worry that that's still not enough sleep.  But logistically, it's hard to get everything done in th evenings and get him to bed much earlier than that.
