My house smells wonderful..... (Cinnamon water)
I grew up in Cochabamba,Bolivia. And learned quite a few "strange" things (quoting my step-sis LOL). But,one of my kids favorite things to drink is "cinnamon water". Most people in South America have very little money so they make do with what they do have.
There is no extra money for soda and/or kool aid. They either drink water (that has to be boiled unless you want to get REALLY sick) or they boil stuff (cinnamon, peach seeds, cloves, anise) and make their own drinks.
Our two favorites are the cinnamon and the peach seeds( I actually add some fruit to it too). The cinnamon is really easy to do and once it is cool has an amazing flavour.
Take two cinnamon sticks (this is enough to make over 4 gallons) and add water. Start boiling...the only trick is that once it starts boiling you have to keep it boiling for a while. In other words,it starts to boil wait 7 minutes (until it has boiled some of the water off) and then add some more cold water. Do this about 4 times. The water will start to get a red wine color to it..it is ready. Wait until it cools down some;add sugar until it is sweet enough for you. Place in refrigerator, wait until cold. I guarantee it will be all gone in a couple of hours.
It also has the bonus of making the house smell REALLY good.
