Homemade fabric softener

I'm in need of a very inexpensive fabric softener. I've heard of using vinegar, but what else works? I don't have a working dryer so wool balls or anything used in the dryer won't work.

I don't care too much about my regular clothes, but for my towels they get pretty stiff from hanging in the sun to dry.

TIA

Quarter cup white vinegar in the rinse cycle. It makes clothes soft and fluffy. They won't smell like vinegar when dry.

I use vinegar in the washer. Doesn't smell like vinegar at all when dry I have seen a homemade recipe using hair conditioner, but I have never tried it... maybe google homemade fabric softner and see what you can find?
