How old is the house? Kids sense things we can't.

Has he ever had to sleep in his own room before or is this a new experience to him?

Just keep putting him back. Does he have a nightlight?

Maybe try laying with him in his bed until he falls asleep? Letting him know that there is nothing to be afraid of in his room might help. If he wakes up, he'll come in your room. Bring him back into his bed and lay with him for a few minutes. It won't happen over night, but if your consistent with it, he'll get the idea eventually.

I agree with keep putting him back and laying there a while.

Try sitting in his room where he can see you but with your back to him until he falls asleep. It worked with my little guy. What ever you do will not be an instant fix but he will get there if you work with him
