glass cooktop crisis

I just went to the kitchen and and found a huge crack in my glass cooktop!! dh bought it for me about a yr ago and isnt sure he bought the protection plan... but does anyone have any experience replacing just the top of a smooth top range?

Thanks! I just priced the replacement tops and we are getting a new stove for about the same price. Im going back to traditional burners though. we have no idea how this broke either.

Is the old one past the basic warranty that came with it?  It is a nuisance that you have to get a new stove.

yes. pastwarranty. bought it in Oct 2012

yes. We figure that either something dropped on it, and weakened it and then when dh cooked on it it cracked. or. ds cooked pasta earlier that day and left the pan on the burner after he drained pasta and it cracked then. then dh didnt notice when he cooked on it.

a friend used to sell appliances and she warned me when i first got it to make sure that i didnt put heavy things in the cupboard over the stove because she had quite a few customers who had dropped spice jars or dishes onto their smooth tops and had them shatter. so I thought we were good in that dept because I only have tupperware there.
