My 17 yr. old grandson has been sent to live with me. He has meltowns everyday. How do I help him? He has been in and out of mental facilities since he was 6 and was just determined to have autism a year ago. I want to keep him, and teach him to have a normal life. His mother has given up on him. Help Me!

Welcome to CafeMom,
Is he seeing  a counselor?  Have you asked in the autism group what you can do to help?
Hugs to you & nice to meet you :)

Talk with his doctor for sure. You will be able to get guidance there.

I thik it's great that you want to stop up and help him. Definitely talk with his doctor. I would also work on getting an IEP for him if he doesn't already have one in school. That will help him get some support help in school.

Definitely check out the group mentioned below too.

Maybe a counselor and are you able to sit and talk to him?

Join the autism groups.

You will need patience. I have no other help for you but to breath. I have no experience with autism really except some friends who have kids with it. I know they have a lot of noise & sensory issues. Also diet I believe helps.

Good luck don't give up on him
