Shouting at an 8 month old?

Apparently my DH read somewhere that when a baby is having a fit or seems to be crying for no reason, at a certain age it is okay to shout loudly at them to get their attention and break them out of the cycle of crying.  I don't know WHERE he read it, but I told him I do NOT like it but he gets mortally offended if I try to take the baby from him when he does it.  If DS seems to be throwing a fit or is crying for what seems to be no reason (not tired, hungry, wet, cold, hurt, etc.), he will pick him up and say loudly, "STOP!"  It's not out of anger, he just seems to think that it will "snap him out of it".  Has anyone else heard of this??  I have told him to stop but he's done it twice now and I HATE it.  When it doesn't work, he will eventually let me take DS and I can always calm him down.  Any advice?

Seems stupid. At eight months old, they have no clue why you're yelling at them.
