How to get my son to stop whining?

He is a little over a year and has started to whine to get his way.  Michael was never a whiner, and to be honest the whining annoys me.  How do you get them to stop?  Do I ignore him?  Do I keep saying no whining?  Any help is appreciated.  Am I being to hard on him?  Do most kids whine?  Thanks!

I simply say "Whining is not the way to get what you want" and walk away. Unless it is something that he can have then I might show him what he should do instead and ask him to give it a try.
