It just really depends on the make and model.  I have an 06 Dodge Durango and I love it.  I feel safe as well as feeling safe for my kids.  If your talking about a pick up truck, that would be safe for a seat as long as you have two row seating.  Regarding cars, I really think it depends on how safe the manufacturer makes them.  If I had to choose, I'd choose SUV or VAN

my inlaws have a ford f series with a back seat and they drive my youngest around in it all the time, i never thought it not being safe but i can see the one lady's point, it being like putting them in the front.
i have a suv, and i like it alot, it has a dvd player, a ton of room to cart stuff home from shopping, like a 42 in plasma tv and then some. it has a built in car seat for my youngest and it works great.

it all depends on what kind of car you want. think long term.

If it's got a back seat the center back of anything in my opinion is the safest place for the todler seat! Crashes and what not can be very dangerous and you never know what will hit you so you cannot depend on saftey features always and not to get hit in a certain spot... That is just my opinion.

I think the choice of car seat matters the most! I have a truck, with a third door and back seat, and my three have always been very safe and secure, and we've done countless road trips!  But it is starting to get small; my boys are in boosters, so they have to sit on the sides, and my daughter's legs have no room anymore.  I'm wishing for a mini van!

W have a truck. I think it's good for the kids, but we are having another baby, so we need something with more room. We are getting a minivan. It has that one extra seat we need. I heard the are very kid safe. I wanted an suv, but a couple of ppl told me that their crashtest ratings are'nt very high for children.

Truck (unless you have a Mercedes or Volvo)  here is why  I only have SUV or trucks...

I was at a red light waiting to turn LEFT.  A truck came up from behind and slammed into us (i didn't have kids yet).  When the cops got there, after they had done some work to find out the details, it turned out that the truck that hit us was going 50mph, and the only thing that was damaged was the bed of the truck, since the bed is not part of the cab there is 2 in. of space, the bed and that space act as a buffer and xylophone, a cop told me that if I had been in a car and the speed the man was going I would have been seriously hurt or dead, the truck would have hit and run over us.  We were fine and the men in the other truck were fine also.   I will only have my daughters drive SUV's or trucks when they get their licenses.

Best thing to do is your research.  Look at the make and models you are interested and check out their safety ratings and how family friendly they are.  I always thought I would get an SUV when I had a baby cause I despised minivans, but after doing my research we ended up getting the Toyota Sienna.  Was the safest car of it's class, supper family friendly, and by far the best car purchase I have ever made.  Auto doors are a dream and the room is awesome!!  I don't have to worry about upgrading to something bigger when we have 2 car seats to deal with.
