Coughing like crazy

Can anyone give suggestions for a 6 month old with a cough. I have an appointment for next week with his pedi about it, but until then I want to know if I can do anything to help break up some of his chest congestion. I saw at the store that Vicks makes a plug-in, but do they work or is that a waste of money? I have a humidifier in his room now, but it doesn't seem to be doing much good. I've also used the menthol vapor bath during his bath. Again, no signs that it helped.
Thanks for any advice that is given.

YEAH THOSE PLUG INS NEVER SEEMED TO WORK FOR ME.  WHEN MY BOYS WERE BABIES I WOULD ALWAYS PUT THE JOHNSON AND JOHNSON VAPOR LOTION ON THEIR CHEST WITH WARM WASHCLOTH FOR A WHILE WITH THE VAPORIZER RUNNING.  IT ALWAYS SEEMED TO BREAK EVERYTHING UP INSIDE.  IT ALSO WASN'T AS STRONG AS PUTTING REG. VICKS ON THEIR CHESTS.  HOPE THIS HELPS A LITTLE.  I JUST HAD MY LITTLE NEPHEW TO THE ER LAST NITE FOR BAD CASE OF WHOOPING COUGH.  POOR KID.  GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR LITTLE ONE.
