How do poor people eat right and lose weight???

I just turned 42 and in the last couple years I have gained 50 lbs.  I weight 120 til I turned 30 then I weighed 140 when I turned 40 and now in the last two years I have went up 50 lbs and I absolutely HATE it.  I quit smoking 3 months ago and am going to try to start walking when it gets warmer but I also want to try to start eating right but it is sooooo expensive to eat right.  My husband needs to lose about 10 lbs and I need to lose at least 50 lbs.  He also needs to eat right because he has had a heart attack and also he has high chlosterol but we only have one income at this time and the only thing I can buy after paying all the bills is all the cheap stuff that isn't good for you.  We eat a lot of bread, potatoes, eggs, mac and cheese, hamburger, hot dogs, green beans, corn, pork chops and chicken.  After my husband's heart attack in 2006 I tried to buy chicken, veggies and fruit but that stuff is sooooooo expensive.  I went to the store one day and bought a bag of just fruit and veggies and it was almost $50 dollars...what we normally eat I could have got about 3 or 4 meals out of that much money.

Like I said earlier I am going to try to start walking when it gets warmer but that is going to be hard for me too because I have a real hard time breathing.  I get out of breath VERY easy so that is why I want to try to focus on changing what I eat too.

Anyone have any good weigh loss ideas that are cheap or anything advice at all I would GREATLY appreciate it!!!!!!!!

A lot of it is about switching priorities at the grocery store. I think that junk food is expensive. You can still buy the chicken but only cook it in a little oil or broil it. Switch potatoes for brown rice which isn't expensive. Stay with seasonal foods and if that is too expensive buy frozen. We also eat a lot of yogurt. That is what I eat 2 meals a day and they are only .50 cents a piece.  If you cut out all the processed foods you will end up saving some money.

i use ground turkey instead of ground beef.  it usually is about 1.39 a pound where beef is 1.69 a pound.  the only time i use the beef if i mix it with the turkey for like a meatloaf but other then that turkey.

buy frozen veggies if you can.  That saves a bundle, and frozen veggies aren't loaded w/ sodium like canned are.  same as fruits.  Try to stay away from too many carbs.  there is a website my nutritionist gives everyone who needs to lose weight, and it's galled mypyramid.gov and you plug in your info and you plug in how much food you eat every day, and you want to stay withing 1500 to 1800 calories per day to lose weight.  Start slow, and move closer to the 1500 mark.  You're about my size, I think.  And that's what she told me and my husband who started at 270 pounds.  It's a great site (it's FREE!!!) and it tells you what types of foods you're missing from your diet.  Also, buy 100% whole wheat (and make sure it says 100% on the package) pasta, crackers, breads etc.  And I also started by eliminating one thing at a time that was my downfall.  Like dessert every other night.  Now it's once a week (except when I hit that time of the month lol).  cut out fatty, sugary drinks, and go for crystal light or something else.  It's not a DIET, it's a lifestyle change.  Diets DON'T work!!!  Watch your portions and go for fiber full foods that leave you fuller longer, like shredded wheat cereal, as opposed to fruity pebbles that is nothing but sugar.  If you want a workout/weightloss buddy, add me!  I just got myself a jogging stroller today, so I'ma bust my big ol behind back into shape, lol!

Go to the grocery store EARLY on Monday morning.  I've found that's when the produce manager marks down overstocked, bruised, or overripe produce.  (yay, saving money)  You can eat the produce that day or freeze it for use in smoothies, or dice it for omelets!

Believe it or not it is a big conspiracy...the government mandates food prices, makes it so the poor can only afford junk food and have to be put on meds for diabetes, high blood pressure etc. and the government gets kick back from the pharmaceutical companies...that is the price the poor have to pay...so sad

buy in bulk. we are members at costco. we can get 8 packs of 2 breast per pack so a total of 16 breasts for $20. that way, we just cook the 2 chicken breast with a starch and veggie. pork chops are pretty cheap. you can get a huge pack of them and freeze individual chops and defrost as you need. as long as you have a veggie and starch in good quantities, thats good. cut out all soda and sugary drinks. try drinking only water along with juices. sometimes i only buy the ground beef the day i use it. i hope all this helps!!

try getting the frozen veggies and fruits. you can put them in stuff or cook the veggies. also try eating canned tuna and chicken or buying chicken in bulk and splitting it up. you can split it raw and freeze or cook all and freeze the cooked chicken and just pull out what you need. also you can do frozen dinners like lean cuisine and just add a salad or something. also you can drink water - use a water filter and refill a glass instead of sodas or other stuff. and of course use coupons for everything you can to help compensate for the increase.

May be they don't hardly eat at all?  Just throwing that out there as an option.
