Please bump!!!

My son is 11 years old and ever since his surgery when he was two he has had a food issue. It has been a battle to get him to eat, and it seems like it is getting worse. Here is a list of what he eats:

breading off of chicken strips and cheese sticks (so barley any meat) taco shell with shredded cheese and pizza, but with all the toppings off so basically crust, peanut butter (occasionally because im deathly allergic!)

cereal,toast,crackers,waffles,oatmeal,spaghetti noodles

french fries, mashed potatoes, strawberries and sometimes bananas

milk and orange juice

Thats it.And he picks at all of it.I swear I dont know how he survives! He seems fine, but he is skin and bones. And when he gets sick he ends up in the hospital for dehydration, and guess what, he had the stomach flu.We all did,but he is still recovering and I look at him and I feel like such a bad mother.Somebody is going to report me for cps thats how bad he looks to me.I dont know what to do,Ive been to the doctors,Ive tried to fatten him up with malts every morning (which was a mistake!)I have had many talks with him,he has been in therapy..I dont know what els to do!

His Surgery

He had a tonsillectomy and an adenoidectomy when he was two.He had croup a week before surgery but the doc said it was ok.Well it wasent. He had a bad reaction to the anesthetics and was in recovery for 1 hour longer than normal and was not breathing on his own that whole time (two hours)The nurses didnt tell me anything but "he is just taking longer to recover"Until I freaked out and demanded to speak to the doctor. He admitted to what went wrong and I found out my son had been moved upstairs and was staying the night to be observed.I brought him back home and he would not eat or drink and giving him meds was impossible,He became very dehydrated so I brought him back to the hospital,It took a team of iv specialist an hour to get an IV into him, it was horrible. He spent a week in the hospital, refusing all foods and liquids. It took 3-4 nursed to hold him down to squirt medicine into his extremely sore throat which really makes me mad, I should have spoken up!I finally asked if I could just bring him home to see if he would eat there and they agreed.Well he did.But he wasent the same kid.he did not trust me anymore. He did not enjoy food anymore. He freaked out whenever I washed his hair, brushed his teeth or gave him medicine, basically anything that had to do with his head,He pretty much got over that except for the food issue and trusting others and himself.

So he's afraid to try new things too?  Sometimes if kids "help" plan and prepare dinner they're more interested in eating it.  He won't drink KoolAid, lemonade or Gatorade either?  I wonder if you let him pick out something new to try drinking if he'll give it a shot.  Maybe this is his way of trying to control his life.

try something different than what he usually eats no more breaded stuff. Thats un-healthy anyways try grilled chicken. if he eats good then let him have the cheesesticks as a treat or a snack not as a meal.

Sorry you are going through this. Have you looked at the cookbook Deceptively Delicious? It has some good recipes for kids and how to hide things in food to get them to eat things they may not normally eat.
