The little boy I watch is deaf in his left ear the DR's think.

Well today was the first real day watching him and he doesnt respond to sounds at ALL! I tried snapping by his ears, talking, and my mom was clapping and nothing nodda zip.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but he also spits up... alot. Are the 2 connected?

I have never watched a baby this young that was on formula (powder) and don't really know what is normal.

Oh he's about 6 weeks. Give or take. His mom is one of my best friends and I'm trying to help her and her family out =)

I was 98% deaf when i was less than a year old. The dr's put tubes in my ears and I'm fine.

My daughter spit up a good bit when she was that age and she was on formula.

My brother and husband both had tubes. My brother still has messed up ears.

I never did formula. DD nursed for 11 months then we went to milk so this is all new to me. I've only done formula with older kids (7 or 8 months and up)

i dont know anything about a child beening deaf that young. my dd would throw up bad with her milk. yes she was on the powder kind. she had acid reflex. i would tell her to talk to the babys dr. if it is acid they  can help her with it. my dr told me to put rice cerale(sp) in my dd bottle yes it did help a lil bit. there isalso drops you can get at walmart to help. if that is what it is.

I doubt the spitting up has anything to do with him being hearing impaired.  Does he spit up a lot and often.  My daughter would spit up a lot turned out she needed soy formula.  And my son would spit up but swallow it he had reflux.

As for him not hearing tell her to bring it up to the pedi so she can have another hearing test done.

My oldest son is deaf.  He was born with profound hearing loss and became completely deaf by this second birthday.  He wouldn't respond to noises since he was born.  It is definately something to get checked out.

This is the first day watching him. Every time he has eaten he has spit up. It may be a little here and there or alot at once. =( I feel bad for the poor guy

it may seem like alot but it might not be.  For your daughter the pedi said take a tablespoon of water and pour it on the counter and it looks like a bigger mess then it really is.  Hope you can find out what is wrong and find out if he will be hearing impaired so the family can start learning now so they can comunitcate with him when he is older.

Mom may be the only one who knows if it is really spit up or much, much more. If you really think it is everything he is eating beware that although he has gained wait thus far he could stop gaining and loosing weight quickly. My daughter was 8 weeks old when she suddenly started puking up everything that she ate. She was born very healthy, happy and gaining weight great. Doctors tried to tell me that some babies spit up alot and tried Acid Reflux medicine. My first daughter spit up heavily and I new this was different. Doctors didn't believe me and really take action until she started loosing weight. Like another responder they did an ultrasound and discovered she had Pyloric Stenosis in which the muscle between the stomach and intestines hardens and thickens not letting food pass. After a short laproscopic surgery she was much better and thriving again. All I can say is to stick with your gut feeling and if it doesn't seem right keep going back to the doctor and research and go in to the doctors armed with what you think it could be!
