My sd just turned 11 at the begining of the month and her mom thought it would be a good idea to get her a cell phone for Christmas. It didn't bother us, she paid for it, she's buying the minutes so why would we care?! Well now Sd is acting like she's 'entitled' to unlimited text, unlimited internet, a new iPhone all for 'only $175 a month'....well of course her mom doesn't have the money and won't get any of it for her because they just moved into a new place and have bills to pay so my question is how much do you pay for your childs cell phone bill and how much did you spend on their phone? What kind of plan do they have? I just want to see if we're being 'old fashioned' by thinking that's too much for an 11 year old.
IMO kids that age dont need a phone. my kids are still only toddlers but when they are 10 and 11 i hope i will know where they are at all times. my dad let my sister who is 13 have a cell phone and she got in trouble with it.. talking to older guys and things she should not be doing. and the kids at my job all have one and it gets them in trouble at school. i think she should be happy with what she has!
my brother paid my first cell and i only had 350 minutes, no text. That was when i was 11, so 9 years ago lol. Then after that I had a prepaid phone simply to call my parents when i needed, so maybe 2 or 3- 15 dollar cards a month... 45 a month? I am not looking forward to when my kdis have cell phones.
btw, i have an iphone and its expensive, and i only justify it because i am in online school and i can do my homework for school on the phone, and my dh and i use the gps nearly everyday. we are stationed in arkansas and we can never find anything. the closes babies r us is 20 miles away! so... an 11 y/o does not need an iphone.

I agree, I don't think she should have one, she's not in sports or any extra-curricular activities, she's always with one of her parents or grandparents who all have cell phones so I don't think she needs one but for some reason her BM got her and her 8 year old sister each pre-paid cell phones....sd is EXTREMELY ungrateful and spoiled by her grandmother and I think getting it for her was her moms way of trying to be the 'cool parent' since Grandma is always the one spending big bucks on the little brat! I wonder if BM is regretting getting it for her in the first place. I was just wondering if it was normal for these days to spend that much on a kid that age for a cell phone or if she was being as ridiculous as we thought! lol

I have Verizon and it costs $9.99 a month to add her to our plan. This includes unlimited text and she has an allotment of minutes to use each month. For a family of 4 it costs us about $130 a month. 3 of us have Voyagers and it costs $50 to get one, with a 2 year contract.
