My Neice is 40 weeks tomorrow and we are just wondering how long most doctors wait to induce labor?

Both of my docs said they wouldn't induce until 42 weeks.

ETA - That was actually giving me medication and breaking my water.  They did believe in trying to strip the membranes to see if they could get labor going.

I was 41 1/2 weeks before my doctor decided to induce but I went into labor on my own while in the hospital.

My doc wanted to induce me at 41 weeks, but luckily I went into labor 3 days after my due date.

41-42 is the standard...it depends on the doc and the mom...

10 days past the due date if the baby isn't under stress

Some will go two weeks, but they will do non-stress tests to make sure her placenta is ok, and everything.  Some doctors now though let their patients get to 40 weeks and then induce immediately following w/o doing any tests or letting the baby come on its own.  I would suggest her wait it out so long as everything looks ok w/ the baby because inductions SUCK and many end in emergency sections and other complications.  But some end perfectly fine and go great like my BFF's did w/ her first baby.  4 hrs labor and next to no time in pushing.  My DH was a month late, but they don't let you go that long anymore.

my OB told me that she waits no more than one week past the due date.
