So my mother says at least.... My son is 16 months old and still on the bottle at nap time and bed time. Well today I said no more. I layed my son down for a nap without his bottle. He cried for about 20 minutes and then went to sleep for his usual 2 hours. All the time he's crying, my mother is on the phone right in front of me talking to my sister. "I don't think he's ready either", "She self weened too", "She's forcing him to grow up too fast", "I won't make him sleep without it".. OH YES YOU WILL... I want him to have good teeth, I don't want him to be dependant on a bottle to make him go to sleep, I want him off the bottle because it's not healthy for him to have it at 16 months. But apparently I am wrong, because she let all 4 of her kids self ween from the bottle.. Well he's not yours, he's mine. She babysits for me 3 days a week, while I'm in school, so I took all his bottles and threw them in the dumpster down the street. Try and give him a bottle now!!!! This infuriates me to no end that she would consider going against my wishes with my son... she has in the past, so I had to make sure she couldn't this time! HA!
Okay end rant!!!

I dont think your a bad mom. I weaned my oldest two and they started sucking thier fingers instead now they are 5 and 8 (they were bf mostly as babies). Yes they still suck those dog on fingers no matter what I do. I learned sometimes you have to wait until they are past they oral stage before you take away the bottle/breast. I think he is at the right stage to wean. I do still give my 20 month old baby a bottle but he can only have water in it. Everthing else is in a sippy, a child size cup or a juice pouch/box. I do think it was really awful that your mom talked about you like that but honestly I wouldn't let it bother me like you said he's yours.
Thnaks for the support ladies. I don't want to cause an oral fixation, but at the same time he has been on a sippy since he was 4 months old, a straw cup since 9 months and has recently started drinking from an open cup at the table.. there is no need for the bottle... He gave up his paci on his own at 5 months.. so I hope he can handle this..
