3-hr Glucose Test

Hello. I am just wondering if anyone out there has had to do the 3-hr glucose test (I am sure there is someone). I just have a few questions. First, is their any advice as to how to get through it? LOL. 2nd is the drink the same one? Third, do they poke you each time to draw your blood, or do they put a line in and leave it? Lastly, has anyone gotten sick off of it?

Oh and how many took it, and didn't have GD?

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I go for mine Friday morning. Anything else you think I might want to know would be helpful too. I am just nervous, because my veins roll, and then I go into shock and almost pass out when I have my blood drawn.

i had to do the 3 hour test with both my kids it is a nasty drink u drink and u have to do it in 5 minutes and then u sit there for an hour and after the hour is up they draw blood and then u come back and sit there for another hour and they draw blood and etc until the three hours is up .

I had to do the 3 hr test with my second pregnancy, but everything turned out fine.

You go to the hospital (unless they actually do them at your docs office) they stick you and take some blood, then you drink the drink (same one), then they stick you every hour after that.  A different poke everytime.  I suggest taking something to read while you wait.  I went through every magazine the hospital lab had... LOL

Maybe I can help, when I was hygentist school I worked as a phlebotomist in an outpatient lab, we constantly did 1,2,3hr glucose tolerence tests, Well I am sure as you know that you cannot eat or drink anything, but you can have water but thats it, when you arrive in the lab try to get there as early as possible to get it done, I would recommend bringing a good book or a magazine and you will probley start to feel tired, so I would ask one of the phlebotomist if there is a room you can go and lay down in, whatever you do DO NOT LEAVE, if you do the test will dismissed and they will contact your doctor and you will have to come back and do it all over again, oh when you drink the drink they will give you five minutes do complete the drink, FYI, if you vomit the test will also be invalid, I hope this helps msg me if you want more info.

I have had it done 2 times. With my second dd i failed the 1 hour one and had to do the 3 hr. no GD.

this time with #3 I ha dto do the 3 hr at 12 weeks. I have PCOS and risk for GD is high. I have to go back in at 24 weeks and do the 3 hr again.

They draw blood. drink the drink. draw blood 1 hr after,. draw in another hour,then draw again at 3rd hour. they poke 2 times in each arm...every other....no line left in and you arnt even allowed to have water while you wait...

And actually, if I remember correctly (I could be wrong) they take some blood 30 minutes after you drink the drink, then 30 minutes after that, and then every hour after that until 3 hours.

I have never had to take the 3 hour.  But I get GD while pregnant.  I failed the 1 hour one so badly that I didn't need the 3 hour one...yikes huh?  Anyway.  Depending on your number of the 1 hour, a lot of women fail the 1 hour and go on to pass the 3 hour.  Do you know your number for failing the 1 hour?

But, you drink the same drink and they stick you after every hour, so it will be a different stick every time.  You have to be there for like 4 hours I guess?  I am glad I didn't have to take it.  GD sucks, but I found it easy to manage, so with future pregnancies I am not even going to do the 1 hour...I am just gonna pretend I already failed. The GD diet is a very healthy way to eat anyway while pregnant...all pregnant women should just eat that way LOL! sorry, I am babbling now.

I had to do the 3 hr test. Bring a book to read and get over the fear of needles if you have one. The drink is the same and they stick you every time they draw blood. Also, take some crackers or something for a snack when you're done.

just did mine friday morning... ugh

it was my second time because i threw up the first one :( so yeah...i got sick... the 3 hour one, the drink is the same but i think its sweeter.

the place that did mine stuck me each time (4 times.... once before the drink and then each hour after )

bring a book or some magazines. something to do while you are there waiting.

and when i failed the one hour test they called me the next day and told me but they havent called me since i took the 3 hour.....so i am assuming i passed but i have an appointment thursday and will find out for sure then....

yes its the same nasty gross drink i would bring a book or a laptop computer so you have somethign to do. they will call you once an hour to take your blood from whati  have seen they restick you each time BUT every hospital is different i had to have this test done i hated it i didnt have gd but when i did the 5 min test i was borderline so they made me do the three hour test oh and a ward of advice plan you bathroom trips carfully when they say they have to take your blood at 1207 they mean 1207 and if your in the potty they get cranky.

It's a much sweeter drink, can make you naseous, have to poke you every time. Make sure you get there early so you won't be fasting to long. I failed, had to go on insulin.
