Does anyone honestly think joining the military is a waste of a life????? Personaly i just don't get it. If no one was in the militarty there would be no one to defend us and we americans would easily be wiped out!
FOR THOSE THAT DON'T GET IT I DO NOT THINK THAT THE MILITARY IS A WASTE OF A LIFE. I THINK IT IS BENIFICAL TO SOMEONE AND TO OUR ENTIRE NATION. I THINK THEY SHOULD GET HIGHER PAY, AND ALL IN ALL BE TREATED BETTER THEN WHAT THEY ARE BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY DO! MY BROTHER WAS A NAVY SEABEE AND IF MY SON EVER JOINS I WILL BE THE PROUDIST MOTHER IN THE WORLD.
oh also if you don't like the post then why bother answering? no one made you open it. It blatently said what it was about in the title. If someone didn't want to see it then they have no need to read it.

then go look at the other post, there are over 300 posts, you should find the answers you are looking for in there. but to start a totally new thread about basically the same thing is to me a little uncalled for. esp for how heated the other post is. and of course now you are getting heated responses in here too.
military life definitely isn't easy. yes, you see your spouse less and the children see their parent less. but it just makes that time they're home that much more special. it can be hard on a marriage, but in the end it'll just make everyone involved so much stronger.

It is a noble profession and I thank God everyday for our military men and women - and their spouses. So to answer your question, NO, I do not think it is a waste.

because as an army wife i find things like this very rude, and disrepectful and condisending, its frustrating. why would you even feel the need to ask that question? really, what prompted you to need to ask that?

Thank you all ladies for sharing your oppion and keeping this post drama free and allowing the mother's who disagree to state their oppion without ganing up on them. Even showing concern for the mother with the son in basic.
I'm going to try not to read the other replies because I know someone will say something that will make me angry!
My dad's parents weren't the best, to say the least. At 2, his mom dropped him off at his grandma's and never looked back. A year later, his younger brother came to live with them. His grandmother had a 6th grade education, worked in a mill for a few dollars a week and was a widow with her own children still at home.
My dad did well in school because he's so competetive. He always wanted to be the best. But, there was no way they could afford college back then. His only choice of work was to work at the mill. He knew that wouldn't be much of a life for him.At 17, he lied about his age and joined the military. This was the only hope for him to make something out of himself. He spent 22 years in the Army, 2 tours of Vietnam and retired at 39. Somewhere in all of that, he met my mother and had me.
After he retired, he went to college on the GI Bill. He graduated suma cum laude and had heart surgery during his senior year, at 44!
My dad is who he is because of the military. So, no it was not a waste of life, it saved his life. My dad is 73 now. And he is, without a doubt, the greatest man I know!
God bless my dad and all of our soldiers!
What am I so upset about? My son has been at bootcamp for months with a severe injury and they are in fact treating him horribly!!!! The platoon he is stuck in is EXTREMELY depressing. They are fighting over a fracking sink! My ex is a federal law enforcement officer and I know for a fact that federal prisoners are treated better than my son is right now. When he gets to make a phone call it sounds horrendous in the background! There is absolutely no DI that gives a frack anymore and his recruiter doesn't give a frack about him anymore either! Not one FRACK there cares about him anymore! Although he's been there for months he's still only considered a recruit and has been treated like one even though he was squad leader and finished his damned run in record time with a severely fractured hip that may be fracked up the rest of his life! (He had to have 3 pins and 21 staples in his hip) My granddaughter still has absolutely NO benefits and just gets a broken daddy when he does finally get to come home! That's what pisses me off the most is he was trying to take care of his daughter! The lying recruiter said she would get benefits right after he got to bootcamp. Fracking lier!!!!

Wow i assure you they are taken care of at bootcamp, esp if they are injured, what exactly are you so upset about. what is making you think ppl in prison are getting treated better? and btw the mail at boot camp takes FOREVER to get threw to them, and yes they WILL with hold it from you to be mean, or whatever, but they eventually give it to you. and if this is all over some mail then seriously. my husband said every time he got a letter from me they made him do push ups, its just what happens in basic.

My son is limbo right now at a bootcamp where he was severely injured during training so YES it is a fracking waste!!!!!!! Still don't know what the frack is gonna happen to his life and he's been there for fracking months! Rapists and murderers in a federal prison have it better than he does right now! MFer's can't even get his fracking mail to him!
Curiosity to see how many people were as narrow minded as the other poster. Sometimes i have been Dumbfounded with the polls that i have put up.

I am sorry about your son! I am surprised with a severe injury they aren't letting him come home. I know some guys "got out" with severe injuries but others with "smaller injuries" had to stay in. I know when my hubby would call from basic it sounded HORRIBLE. But, he said that there is always yelling going on and no big deal. And I'm surprised at the insurance. We had insurance while hubby was in basic. I got all the papers sent to me and just had to go to a local base or office to get my id. I hope everything works out okay. Hang in there! The military is honestly not a bad place, even though basic is Hell.

I'm sorry to hear that. There is no way to compensate someone for their life either. No money will change how you live the rest of your life if you are injured. A friend of my fiancee got into some trouble a while back and he had the choice jail or the army. Well him thinking the army would be a better choice chose that. Well he was deployed to Iraq and was killed last year. If he would have chose jail he would be home now with his daughter.
