What rate of pay is appropriate to ask for?

Hello

So I am talking with this mom who is looking for a babysitter one day a week for 9 hours for her 2 month old and almost 2 year old. This would be my first time looking after someone else's little ones and getting paid for it. She asked me how much I was asking for and I wrote her and said 11-12 an hour, thinking at least 5 per kid per hour. Is that way too much for just one day? I am about to email her back with an addendum and say ya I don't know what I was thinking... Or is that fair enough? Please enlighten me! Thanks

Are you going to her house or is she bringing her kids to yours?  If you are going to her house will you be bringing your child(ren) with you?  What are do you live in?

ETA: do you have any certifications/training?

I honestly wouldn't pay over $100 for one day of babysitting. I know its a lot of work because I've done it before, but that is way too high. My twin boys daycare was $350 a wk for both of them for 5 days when they were toddlers (there was a small discount for having a second child there though).

I personally would charge $20 per kid/per day

I take my son to an at home sitter. She charges me 20 a day for my 2 yr old. Considering a 2 mo old is more work, I would say 70 a day.

Where did you get a 170 from?

I only use mine on occasion and she charges 22.00 for half a day (4 hours or less) and then 38.00 for a full day.  She provides the meals as well, we bring diapers and wipes.

Wait. At $12/hour for 9 hours, it's $108 not 170. But, if she stuck with $10/hour ($5 per kid) it's only $90. 90 is still too high. That's $360-432 per month for FOUR DAYS! Um, yeah that's WAY too much. I would say do less than $10, like 8. That at least gets it below $300, but I feel daycares charge less. At least the one I went to. They charged $20 for a part day, I think $25-30 for full day. One kid. That means she could have daycare for about $100-200 dollars per month. *shrugs* Babysitting doesn't seem very profitable to me.

day care here is only 20 dollars a day. so for two kids i would ask for about 50-60 since you have to pay out of pocket for food or entertainment.
