I have been staying at home for over a year now, which is awesome.  I love my kids (6 year old and 6 month old).  I just really want to work.

I went to school for 4 years to get my B.S. in Nursing.  After graduation, I had to work part time as a barista while I got my application together, then I studied my ass of to take the board exam. Well after I passed, I found out I was pregnant!  I applied for jobs until my 4th month into pregnancy...then DH and I decided I should just wait until our baby was born.  No one was calling me for interviews anyways.

After our son was born, I began applying again.  I have been submitting applications via fax, email, online, snail mail, in person for the past 6 months.  I try to apply to at least 5 a night online when everyone is in bed.  Fixing up my resume, typing out applications, writing out cover letters....EVERY NIGHT.

No one has EVER called me for an interview.  I've gotten a few of the automated rejection emails.  I just wish someone would call me.  I would much rather be called in for an interview and not get the job, because at least I would feel like they at least CONSIDERED me worthy of the position.

I don't NEED the job to survive, we are doing great because of my hard working ass bustin husband.  But if I had a job we could start savings accounts for the kids.  DH can work on building his career (he doesn't consider his job right now as his career yet) and I can start mine.

This is like the ultimate rejection.  I feel like trash that nobody wants.  It sucks so much, I worked so hard and nothing is coming from it.

I got a call on Monday from an immunization clinic and they hired me over the phone!  It's only from September-December (flu shot season), but it's something that can go on my resume, as experience and we will have extra money for my eldest son's birthday and Christmas! So I am excited.

  • I don't know where you live, but in my area you basically have to know someone in order to get a job in a hospital.

My best friend is certified as a CNA and is working on her nursing degree.  She recently got a job as a CNA on the peds floor at a local hospital because about six months ago she started volunteering 1-2 times per week at that hospital!!  Any way you could volunteer somewhere to get your foot in the door?  That way they'll have a face to go with the name and you can personally talk to someone there about job openings.  Also you can check out the place beforehand to see whether you would like working there!!

  • I'll have to look into it.  I do know people in hospitals nearly everyone in my family and my hubby's family is in some kind of medical field (MA, RN, CNA, LVN)...but they all say there are just no openings and no one is really looking for inexperienced nurses.

I remember 8 years ago, my mother FINALLY got her license after 6 years of working non-nursing jobs and then 10 years of being a SAHM.  She applied at Kaiser on a whim when visiting her dad in the hospital in person and they were so short of nurses they hired her on the spot!!!

Those were the days.  Now the economy sucks and a lot of hospitals here have hiring freezes.  I'm in Northern California.

  • It is scary.  I've been on other forums just for medical professionals, and a lot of the new grads or even those who graduated 1-2 years ago are having the same bad luck as me.  Hopefully your school has good connections or you have a good rapport with people you may be having internships with.  I heard that helps some people.

  • I am in school to become a nurse and a lot of the local hospitals are on a hiring freeze.  Have you applied for part time, or Hospice is always an option.

  • Yes, I have applied to every hospital, clinic, convalascent home, prison, drug rehab center etc. etc. etc within a 50 mile radius.  We are even ready to relocate if someone hires me

I've applied to every type of position there is.  I've also applied to full time, part time, short hour, on call, per diem, seasonal, temporary.

    I'm not picky at all.

  • Oh honey, don't I know. I am going crazy. Good luck with your job search. I just found out that I was hired the other day and can't WAIT to go back to work. It's been 6 months at home this time for me and omg, if I don't get out, I'm going to go bonkers.

Thank you. I am sending positive thoughts your way that something will come along soon. You are a healer and this sad, sick world will never have enough healers.
I am sure that the reason it is taking so long for a nurse to find a position is because God himself has to place you in exactly the right spot at the right time for just the right patient who needs you. When you are needed, you will be assigned. Have faith.

  • I'm sorry that you are down but you need to suck it up. You need to feel lucky that you at least were able to go to school. You need to feel lucky that this recession has not affected your family( your husbands job) Because of the economy my husband had to take a pay cut and now we can barely survive. We don't have enough money to go to school and we don't have anyone to watch our child if we wanted to go to school. So be glad your at least in a comfortable place. But good luck on finding one.
