I have been staying at home for over a year now, which is awesome. I love my kids (6 year old and 6 month old). I just really want to work.
I went to school for 4 years to get my B.S. in Nursing. After graduation, I had to work part time as a barista while I got my application together, then I studied my ass of to take the board exam. Well after I passed, I found out I was pregnant! I applied for jobs until my 4th month into pregnancy...then DH and I decided I should just wait until our baby was born. No one was calling me for interviews anyways.
After our son was born, I began applying again. I have been submitting applications via fax, email, online, snail mail, in person for the past 6 months. I try to apply to at least 5 a night online when everyone is in bed. Fixing up my resume, typing out applications, writing out cover letters....EVERY NIGHT.
No one has EVER called me for an interview. I've gotten a few of the automated rejection emails. I just wish someone would call me. I would much rather be called in for an interview and not get the job, because at least I would feel like they at least CONSIDERED me worthy of the position.
I don't NEED the job to survive, we are doing great because of my hard working ass bustin husband. But if I had a job we could start savings accounts for the kids. DH can work on building his career (he doesn't consider his job right now as his career yet) and I can start mine.
This is like the ultimate rejection. I feel like trash that nobody wants. It sucks so much, I worked so hard and nothing is coming from it.
I got a call on Monday from an immunization clinic and they hired me over the phone! It's only from September-December (flu shot season), but it's something that can go on my resume, as experience and we will have extra money for my eldest son's birthday and Christmas! So I am excited.
So you have your BSN, you are licensed and your continuing education hours are up to date?
Start with the placement office of the university that you attended.
Check the websites of hospitals in your area at least every other day for new job postings.
Contact every nurse-recruiter you can find, in the phone book and online.
In Chicago, agency nurses make the best money, and you have more control over when and where you work.
I do career & job search coaching. I am always happy to help cafemoms (and dads) with resumes, cover letters, job search strategy & interview preparation. Feel free to contact me directly.

a contributing factor could be lack of experience. its never made sense to me though... you dont get a job because you have no experience, but you cant get experience unless you get a job! ugh. im also out of work, im a veterinary technician, and my field is really suffering right now. i was laid off along with 2 other techs and one doctor. no one is bringing their pets in right now, they just get their shots through the township (for free) and are holding off on any other things they might need done. which of course i totally understand. but it sucks. like you, though, im enjoying my time off and getting to be home with my kids all day, i missed that when i was working. now we get to do so much more together.
also, dont forget to post your resume on the online job sites, like careerbuilder.com and monster.com.

omg i know how you feel. i got let go from my job almost 16 months ago and i've found nothing. i apply everyday to a dozen job postings online and still nothing. i've updated my resume changed the wording and still nothing. its scary especially for woman who are single moms like myself. i don't know which way is up or down half the time. i want a dam job already. i'm tired of living on egg shells and not knowing when they're coming to shut off my utilities if i don't pay the bill.
i hope this recession where in ends soon i need to work already.
good luck and congrats with your schooling.
I'm in New Jersey and it sucks out here too!
Yay! Congratulations! I am so happy for you!
