OXFORD -- News 13 has confirmed that a 2-year-old girl is dead after being strangled by a python.

It happened in a home in Oxford, just off of County Road 466, east of The Villages.

It is not known yet if that snake was a pet, or how the child came in contact with the snake.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife have responded to the scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the child's death.

News 13 is monitoring this story and will have more details as they become available.

Whit Gibbons, a professor of ecology at the University of Georgia told the Associated Press that "A human is "just another prey item" to a python -- especially a small human.

"A 20-foot python, if it grabbed one of us, would bite us and then within just, instantly, seconds, it would be wrapped all the way around you and squeezing the life out of you," Gibbons said.

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. -- A 2-year-old girl was found dead Wednesday morning in a Sumter County home after being strangled by a 12-foot pet python. The incident took place at a home on County Highway 466 in Oxford (see map). According to officials, the snake's owner, who is the boyfriend of the victim's mother, said he locked the pet snake up in a cage Tuesday night, but when he awoke Wednesday he found the snake missing from the cage. He then searched the home and found the snake on the little girl and noticed a bite mark on the child's forehead.Officials said the father then repeatedly stabbed the python. The snake was found under a dresser when deputies arrived. It's unclear at this time if the snake is dead. Another snake, reportedly a 6-foot boa constrictor, was also in the house. The victim's mother was identified as 23-year-old Jaren Ashley Hare. The snake is believed to belong to Charles Jason Darnell, Hare's boyfriend. Both are being questioned and charges could be filed, but no decision has been made.Investigators were still on the scene early Wednesday afternoon.Click REFRESH for the latest updates.

  • Where was her mother?

And WHY would you leave a little one alone with any pet?  Hell, I didn't let my RABBIT around my baby.  But hey, giant carnivorous wild thing under glass?  Sure, great idea to leave the kid around it.

Poor child must have been terrified.

  • OMG that is truly truly awful- BUT having said that- it can happen, sometimes with a dog, sometimes with a reptile, or the pool in your backyard, or even backing out of your driveway- unfortunately accidents happen, and though this one is pretty awful in general terms I don't think it's reflective of anyone who chooses to keep a snake for a pet- it's an accident, an anamoly and while my heart goes out to the family (what an understatement) I think this is pretty rare overall.

  • Poor baby! How did no one notice the python was out of it's cage? And if they did why wouldn't they be worried about that happening, that would be my first thought.

  • That is horrible!! I know some cities don't allow animals like that. Sounds like this one was in an inadequate cage.
