    We started slowly we went to showers around 5 with me sitting on the toilet talking to her and then helping with hair (MOM....no shampoo in my eyes... I can still hear her saying that! lol) My husband and I both taught the, usually calling out cues... don't forget under the arms, don't forget the feet, stuff like that. After about 3 months or so, they were on their own....except for my daughter and that shampoo. She just could not get the hang of it.... OH... speaking of shampoo, be prepared... Buy cheap, during those first few weeks of showering alone... seems like they went through a bottle a week! (A little exageration but not much.)

    Good Idea... I Never would have thought of that!!

  •  Please remember, each kid is different...

    1) DD was about 2 - 2.5 when she started to "explore" washing herself. I normally do the bathing - since she was born. My DH and I tend to let her bathe herself by telling her "wash your butt, wash your arms, wash your tummy.." etc. She knows all her body parts really well so it was cake for us :) DD is now 3. She also takes bubble bath's by herself (with the door open of course)...

    2) My husband and I did not "teach her" really. She knows her body parts really well so, she knew what to 'wash'.

    3) See above. With guidance and love :)

    We pour the amount in DD's hands and she does her own hair , then I got behind her. Same with brushing her teeth :)

  • My kids like to have me bathe them rather than bathe themselves. Sometimes, my girls (6 and 3) like to take a shower (not together), but that's not often. Usually, everyone bathes by themselves (that's 4 baths) a couple times a week--not daily--unless they are extra dirty! :)  I help wash the hair in the bath tub  and check to be sure it's rinsed in the shower.  The know how to bathe themselves,but they like mommy to help--keeps the soap out of their eyes :)  BTW, my son is 4 and will sometimes bathe himself.  youngest dd is 10 months...

    I still brush both of their Teeth.. Then after I do it I let them go at it.. Mostly cause That's what their Dentist and Doctor told me to do.

  • 5, he knew how to wash his body and we showed him how to wash his hair. He doesn't always do a great job, but if he does a really bad job we make him go back in and we use the shower head to wash his hair. My 3 year old washes her own body, she has long hair so it will be a while before we try that with her.

  • oh crap.. these questions always suck for me!!!

    ok so.. he was probably around 7-8 years old before he could do it without any assistance. he has high functioing autism... so you would send him in and he would come back 30 minutes later with soap still in his hair... or  on his face... or in his ass crack! lol

    the little guy { i have three kids, 12, 6 and 3}

    the middle child, lynden... still needs a little help. he is not delayed at all... no autism.

    mila is 3 {me-la} little girls are different. they want to wash their hair { at least mine does} she likes to be independant. so i could probably allow that child to shower and she could probably do it.

    however... we question whether she is the seed of satan... so we don't EVER  leave her unattended.

    child is evil! lol {totally joking... kind of}
