How to ride a bike? We just taught my 5 yr old son how to ride without training wheels, and I was talking to my SIL about it. She informed me that she doesn't want to teach my 9 yr old nephew, because HE MIGHT GET HURT. What??

My daughter learned at 5 , my son didnt master it until he was almost 10 , but he is Autistic and has some motor skill issues , he couldnt coordinate pedaling and steering for a very long time. He is now 13 and can ride with ease , but it took a long time.

devin was about 5... but lynden is almost six and hasn't even started learning. he was sick... and has teh pectus excavatum.

truth be told... if your kid's chest looks like this...

you might not want him on a bike! you know what i mean? god forbid... he falls and the handle bars hit him in that hole.

september we go back and have him measured by the surgeon to see if it has gotten any worse.

so until then... we avoid things like the bike.

WOW, I agree that if childrens' chests looked like that they would not be riding a bike. I hope he gets better.

My son is only two so we have awhile before we do the bike thing, but my nephew is was about 5 when he started riding without training wheels. Of course they're gonna get hurt! They're little boys! As long as they have on helmets and maybe some knee pads or elbow pads (for the over protective mamas lol) then they should be fine.

My daughter is 6 and we are still working on getting rid of the training wheels.

My son is only 17 months so way to early for that, but I remember learning about 5 or 6 years old!

Our oldest got his training wheels off when he was 4. Our now 4 year olds have accomplished riding without trainers too.

Oddly enough, our 3 year old has been riding without training wheels since he was a little over a year and a half. That's because her bicycle is one of the kinds without pedals. She has a Hotwalk bicycle. It's a two wheel bicycle that has no pedals and teaches balance first, then you just introduce a bike with pedals later and the kid is on their way.

She has become a pro at riding her bike. She just gives herself a few pushes and then puts her feet up and she rolls along and on two wheels at that. We got our now 13 month old one too and she's even getting really good at riding it. They come in different sizes and heights.

my dh had pectus excavatum. He had a bar put in his chest for I believe 3 years. His mom didn't get it fixed though, when he came to Florida from California at 16 his dad and stepmom got it fixed for him. He still has problems but only because his real mom didn't stay on top of it. As long as you get it fixed as soon as the surgeon gives you the ok it'll look like nothing ever happened.
