 How to ride a bike? We just taught my 5 yr old son how to ride without training wheels, and I was talking to my SIL about it. She informed me that she doesn't want to teach my 9 yr old nephew, because HE MIGHT GET HURT. What??

  • My 6 year old doesnt know how. We work with him ALOT but he cant 'get it'  My neighbors boys both learned at 5 though.

    I'm Ashley, a 27 year old, stay at home mommy of a private schooled 1st grader, non spanked 3 year old, extended rear facing 15 month old, and married to a softball playing husband. They are all boys and they are the loves of my life.  I love to clean, cook, shop and get pedicures. I am *the* princess in my house :)   Why do I rear face my toddler? Because autopsy reports have shown that children under 2 years old are at 4 times the risk of Internal Decapitation when forward facing.

  • I was thinking of doing a post on this today also. With ds#1 he was 7, but that is because dh was in Iraq and I wanted it to be a father/son thing. Now dh is wanting to teach our 4.5 year old and I wondered if there is an age where they are or are not cognitively or mechanically able to. No reason to frustrate our ds. But it looks like he can learn. Good to know.

  • 6 for my dd. My ds is 5 and still has training wheels. Neither one of them LOVED bikes like I did as a kid.

  • it's suppose to be put in during puberty { like your boy had done} but lynden is so young, they are trying to hold off. if we do it now... it has to be redone again during the big growth spurt. from what i understand... it is one of the most painful surgeries for a child to go through { so god bless your little guy.. i'm sure it was hard at first}

    luckily the surgeon is up at mass general for children.  not all of the children's hospitals here deal with it.  none in r.i. where i live...so we went to boston. they are phenominal in boston!

    if.. it never gets too close to his heart... if it remains cosmetic, than there are "fillers" that can be used when he is older. but... if he never mentions it, then we won't push him to fix it cosmetically.

    the second it becomes a medical threat... he is having it done!  i won't hesitate for even a second on that at all.  right now his ribs are at 29 and a half centimeters { out to the sides for those not familliar with it}

    once he hits 33 centimeters.. he has to have it done. we are just hoping it can hold off until puberty.

    my dh had pectus excavatum. He had a bar put in his chest for I believe 3 years. His mom didn't get it fixed though, when he came to Florida from California at 16 his dad and stepmom got it fixed for him. He still has problems but only because his real mom didn't stay on top of it. As long as you get it fixed as soon as the surgeon gives you the ok it'll look like nothing ever happened.

    Quoting mitch576:

    devin was about 5... but lynden is almost six and hasn't even started learning. he was sick... and has teh pectus excavatum.

    truth be told... if your kid's chest looks like this...

    you might not want him on a bike! you know what i mean? god forbid... he falls and the handle bars hit him in that hole.

    september we go back and have him measured by the surgeon to see if it has gotten any worse.

    so until then... we avoid things like the bike.

  • My son was, around 8 I'm guessing. He simply didn't want to ride w/o training wheels.

    And then one day his friends said, take them off dude, so he did.. and he's been riding ever since.

    What's up with that? I still love bikes, if I could get my fat ass on one!

  • My older boy was 10, he's 15 now,  he didn't really care until the friends he walked to school with announced they were going to start riding their bikes, so he learned real quick.

    My 9 year old still doesn't know how, nor does he care. We are still working on other skills with him.

  • *Phew* Now I don't feel so bad! LOL... My DD is 5 1/2, and she has a bike, but will not even try to ride it w/o the training wheels. *Sigh*... I think I will buy her a new bike w/o the training wheels for her Kindergarten grad, as someone else mentioned.  The bike she has is ugly. It was bought brand new from a swap meet. I told the IL's NOT to buy her one from there. They insisted on buying the bike for her. GRRRRRRR....
