Sorry this is long!!! With my first i had complications so I couldn't breastfeed. But w/my second things were new again & everyone forgot to tell me a VERY important tip about breastfeeding that I feel the need to share. I do keep clean,u know the shower at least every or every other day. But no one mentioned ( and I really never thought of) that you need to keep ur NIPPLEs super clean and DRY!!! This means after EVERY feeding scrub them clean & make sure they r super DRY. Also change breast pads after EVERY feeding, EVEN IF PADS ARE DRY!! DON'T SKIP CHANGING THEM EVEN ONCE TO SAVE MONEY...TRUST ME! I wasn't cleaning or changing pads everytime, partly due to i thought i could save money & mostly because I was real busy w/my 10m. old daughter when my son was born. My son started getting thrush at 21/2 m.old & it wouldn't go away! His Pediatricion didn't even mention it could be a prob. on my end ( he is a good ped. doc though). My breasts were reallly sore, the nipples itched rally bad deep in the skin. I called my nurse and he told me to put nystatin on the nipps but that didn't work! My sons thrush kept coming back & my nipples still HURT! Then I Goggled my symptoms the night befoore my Doc. appt. and found out I prob had a "DUCTAL YEAST INFECTION". SURE ENOUGH I DID HAVE THAT. They suggested to first try washing ur nipples after feeding w/viniger (i smell like pickles..LOL) and then put an anti-infective on them called "GENTIN VIOLET". Be very careful handle this stuff!! It stains EVERYTHING!!! But it's safe for the baby & it gets rid of their thrush. Now this works for most poeple (hopefully 4 u) because the Alt. medication is a pill called Diflucan that costs $10 A PILL! You need to cut down on sugar, cheese, and carbs, and take acidophilis, yogurt, garlic tabs. You need to boil all bottles, pacifiers & ur bras after every use. U r supposed to change bras at least once or twice a day & wash, then boil in bleachor vinager. I hope this is helpful to someone.
Quoting NANA21:
I took a breastfeeding class and they said not to any of that. They said rub the left over breastmilk on nipples and let that dry, and thats about it.
DEFINATELY DON'T DO THAT!!! I was told ur breastmilk feeds the yeast if not cleaned and dried properly ! Cleaning ur nipples constantly can also irritate them but just use Lanolin on them,it will help. U can find it at Walmart,Target,or at any drug store.
