How do kids get 'addicted' to these things?

I have noticed how some people complain that all their kids will eat are nuggets, fries, pizza, ect. I am NOT BASHING. I just want to know how you got to that point? I went in to the WIC office the other day and they asked me how many times a week my 12 month old has fries or hotdogs and things like that. I said "She's never had fries or hot dogs." They looked at me crazy. But I looked at them crazy because I honestly didn't know people would feed their 12 month old that. Also, my son, who is 6 has never had a can of soda. I never felt a need to give him that. And I am by no means bashing or saying I'm better than anyone. I just want to know how it gets to the point that a child would want nothing but junk food and soda all the time at such a young age. Does that happen from feeding it to them once or maybe every now and then or is it something that happens on a daily basis?

I would guess children that demand it on a daily basis have weak parents that give in and would rather make things easier on them then parent

I would say some one was being ridiculous if they said they were addicted to any kind of food.

If it is your own child there are ways of NOT letting them eat junk!

And i don't think there would be any withdrawals either.

I had the same question.  My kids never had that stuff when they were little.  They do now that they are older, but not at my house

my dd is 3 and very picky so she likes chicken pattys that is the only "meat" she will eat so that is all she gets for meat and not everyday maybe once or twice a week.

Weak or just allowing their child to have different things.  To answer the question I don't think it's addiction, but more of what they like to eat.  I think sometimes people forget that kids tend to have many similarities as older people...meaning they have likes, dislikes, can get aggravated and whatever else.  I'm assuming the same way a grown woman loves to eat butter pecan ice cream everyday is the same reason a child would like to eat pizza every day...is it right...no, but they have things they like just like you and me.

Personally, I don't think anybody is really addicted.  The stuff tastes good, so naturally (human nature), a kid would want to eat something that tastes good as opposed to something that doesnt tas AS good.  They don't know things like fat/carb grams...or circumstances like obesity, hbp, high colesterol.  And some moms do what's easier for them...they don't want to fight at mealtime, so they give them things that kids are more open to.  Seems easy to figure to me.

eta..I reread your OP, and I think (even tho you said it wasn't your intention), that you wanted us all to know that you don't give your kids this stuff..meaning you are better...or someone else is worse..take your pick.  There's no other reason to start this thread IMO.

When Michelle was maybe 1 or 2 years old I had a babysitter that would watch her at my moms house.  My mother kept grapes, apples, peanutbutter and bread, juice..aka..healthy stuff in the house.  This girl would go and get chips, cookies, chicken nuggets..ect.. and Michelle got to where she wouldn't eat anything else.  They can "form a habit" to these foods but habits can be broken.  Yes we eat hot dogs, pizza, chicken nuggets at my house but not often.. I try to cook meals most nights...and on Friday nights is when they get pizza or something like that..we keep fruit in the house for snacks..

I can see how it would happen, my 3 year old isn't a food junkie but she does have her favorite foods. Like spaghetti and corn and green beans. Every night she wants the same thing over and over again and gets pissy when its not something she wants to eat. So I don't think its just junk food, it can be any food.

I never keep soda at my house so when my kids go to other houses where there is soda, their eyes go wide and they beg for some.  i realized that I gave it to them every so often they might not be that desperate for it but there truly is not one good, redeeming thing to be said about soda.

Both of my kids are pretty good about tasting things.  Tonight we are going to Red Lobster because DS saw a dish on Food Network and wants to try it.  Frankly, I don't like Red Lobster at all but he wants to try something new, I don't want to say no.  Fortunately we have 2 gift cards and a coupon for there.    :)

I guess I am not sure how to respond to this. I mean I have two kiddos (13 and 5) and they have had soda, fries, nuggets, and pizza...we do not eat junk all the time...they eat really good and these are foods that we have on occassion. They are not addicted to junk...and I am not sure kids should be addicted to anything if they have responsible parents. Feeding your kids these foods on occassion are not going to make them obese...it is always eating this way and NO physical activity...so many kids would rather sit in the house and play video games or watch TV and this does not happen in my home. We are involved in activities and enjoy the outside. Parents need to get more proactive and get the kiddos involved in meals..etc!
