LATCH vs Seatbelt and a carseat question *EDIT* another question

Which is safer? the LATCH or the 3pt seat belt?  Yes, this is an honest question.

Also

My 4 y/o weighs 33 lbs but is 39" tall. His current seat goes to 40/40. Is it time to get him a new one in an inch?  If so, what is a good one that will last him another couple of years?  It must be a 5pt.

Thanks to any of you who can help me with this I know a lot of you have many opinions on this subject so I am looking forward to getting some good information.

*EDIT*  My other son's seats say they go up to 40lbs with the 5pt harness and 100lbs with the seat belt.  I want them in 5pts for as long as possible...Do I need to replace those carseats as well when they reach 40lbs? Is there a carseat that seats up to 60lbs or so in a 5pt?

Thats a really nice one! Does that cup holder come off? I have three seats in a row and the cup holders don't work.

Thanks!  Another question for you,  Can you 5pt harness past 40 lbs?  I'm so confused.

I *believe* you can use 5 pt as long as you'd like. But don't quote me on it. You should go a carseat group. They have LOTS of useful information.

Which is safer? the LATCH or the 3pt seat belt?  Yes, this is an honest question. Neither is safer. Use the one that gets you the best install. Also many vehicles don't allow LATCH after 40 or 48lbs so you will have to use the seatbelt at some point.

Also

Is it time to get him a new one in an inch?  If so, what is a good one that will last him another couple of years?  It must be a 5pt. Look at the Graco Nautilus or maybe a Radian 65. The Radians work well if you need 3 seats across, but sometimes the Nautilus will too.

Is there a carseat that seats up to 60lbs or so in a 5pt? There are a few options that harness more than 40lbs. What vehicle, other kids in carseat & budget do you have in mind? You have to stop using the harness at 40lbs & convert it to a booster if that is the limits of the seats you have.

Also check his shoulders. The seats are outgrown if his shoulders are past the top slots even if he is under the weight limit.

What seats do you have now? How does he fit them?

Another poster mentioned the Alpha Omega Elite. I'd skip it. It doesn't make a good booster, is wide & has some install quirks.

That one doesn't harness past 40 lbs unless it's one of the new ones that goes to 50.  For your son I would get the Graco Nautilus.  It harnesses to 65 lbs and has nice high harness slots, then turns into a high back booster, and then a no back booster.  It's an awesome seat!  Here's a link....

And with the current seats you have, as long as his shoulders are at or below the harness slots, the top of his ears are not even with the shell, and he's below the weight limit, he can still use them.

There are 2 versions of the seat. There is one that only goes to 40lbs that has lower slots & another that goes to 50lbs that has taller slots. Both make crappy booster. Both won't work well (if at all) in a 3 across.

This seat will only harness to 40lbs, and the newest go to 50lbs, however they are short shelled and typically outgrown around age 3 with the harness. Not a good suggestion for a child that is already outgrowing a different convertible.

OP, your child will outgrow her seat when she goes over teh weight limit, her shoulders go over the top harness slot, or her ears become level with hte seat back. The height limit is a guideline, you can take one child at 40" that fits perfectly in a seat because he/she has a short torso, and take another that is 40" that is way too tall, because he/she has a long torso. Understand? So as long as she isn't over the back of the saet, or her shoulders aren't over hte top harness slot, she is ok in it.

The Graco Nautilus is a great seat, and sounds like a good fit for both your children. 3- across would fit in a regular size vehicle, but not on a 3rd row of a minivan. Its a great seat. IF you need 3 across, the Radian65 is a great seat that fits mostk ids in the harness to age 6/7 or more. The Nautilus wlll harness to 65lbs, then becomes a high back and eventually a no back booster to 100lbs.
