any good "free" photo editing programs?

anyone know of a program that you can make your photo into black and white and then put a little color back in the photo?

for instance.....I would like to take a pic of my kids turn it to black and white and then put their eyes back in color....or a flower...etc..

I would love to see and hear about your programs that you use...

paintnet..and there is a group on Cafe for it. It's a download and free.

I use paint.net, it's completely free and there are groups on  here with step by step guides to do what you're looking for.

Go to paint.net and click on the download link, then you have to go down the page to the bottom to get to the links to download.

Or, I looked it up on download.com

Gimp is the equivalent of photoshop and there are tons of tutorials
