I know yall have been talking a lot about this but I just got a letter from the school about the presidents speech.

It said something to the effect that parents had called the school expressing their wishes for their children not to hear the speech and that the school board is having the schools make special accomodations for those kids who dont get to hear the speech. Parents have to write a letter to the school to tell them if their child cannot hear the speech.

I dont get it? Are the kids really going to pay attention to it anyway? lol

I remember watching the OJ trial in school! We didnt have to have permission for that!

I dont get it.....I have seen many speeches from all kinds of politicians and have watched many trials growing up......Not a single one damaged me and definately not the "Stay in School and perform civic duties" ones. Its called learning. Parents want mini-mes not children now a days. Instead of being lazy and sheltering them from anything your afraid about talk to them people??

So yeah...I agree

I remember watching the OJ verdict, and I don't remember having to get a permission slip either. Personally of I was in grade school or middle school I am sure I would have tuned out any speech the president made. I still have trouble listening to presidential speeches for too long.

I just read this:|wbml-aim|dl3|link4|

It says what the speech will be about. Honestly I think it's crazy parents are actually saying they'd pull their kids out of school so that they won't see it. Whether you like Obama or not, all he's going to talk about is staying in school and *gasp* being responsible! Oh the horror! How dare he!

My kids aren't in school, but I would have no problem with them listening to Obama. Even if Bush were saying the same thing I would let my kids listen and I don't like Bush.

I just got done reading "The Speech" or the "Prepared Remarks of President Barack Obama --Back to School Event" and I have to say that there is NOTHING offensive about it at all.  That's my opinion of course...

You can read it here:

I haven't gotten anything from my girls' school on the matter, but if they watch it I don't mind.

Ha! I was JUST thinking about the OJ trial! After reading all these posts the past few days it reminded me that my ENTIRE school was tuned in to the OJ verdict. No permission slips. No prior hoopla. No uproar. Nobody made a stink about it. But everyone watched it. And I was only in 6th grade!!!! Something totally irrelevant to school/education....and yet everyone watched.

Its not just the speech. Its the hipocracy that goes along with it thats pissing people off. Obama is touting Responicibilty and Staying in School but he condones and hires people who have dropped out of things like stool through a goose and who refuse to take responcibility for their actions or to behaving in an exemplary fashion. His campaign was full of promises that he has since broken and he's leading us into a societal change that does not advocate personal responcibility. I read the Speech. Pretty words, and thats all they are.

Schools are little more than human warehouses anymore anyway. The avaerage student in 2008 was less intelligent that a student from 1972 and it's getting worse. I want change!  Real change that will help! Not socialism, not "public option healthcare" I want a change back to a time when people actually stood up in front of the IRS and said. 'I fudged my taxes. It was wrong and I'll pay the fines and do my time.' None of this "they just misunderstood the tax code" Shit. Hell, they wrote the damned thing!

Where's the responcibility there? Where's the civic duty?

we got a letter that we could sign if we didn't want our kids to see the President.  I'm not going to keep my son from watching it.  I remember when I was in school I watched the Challenger Explosion.

Well the speech is today...... I wonder how many brainwashed children will now be doing crazy shit like READING, HOMEWORK and PAYING ATTENTION IN SCHOOL!!
