There is no group for lactose intolerance on Cafemom...yet. I met someone at school, though, who is vegan so I know vegans do not eat dairy products. I am joining the group to get meal ideas, learn about vegan diet, and hopefully contribute something myself. Does anyone out there have the same issue?
Sour cream, cream cheese, yogurt, cheese, milk, butter, whip cream, you name it. Good luck. My SIL is LI and it looks awful
Thanks girls! I'm going to be trying all sorts of new things. LOL
I'm lactose intolerant as well. intitially I tried lactaid and stuff like that but how much pills I would have to take would vary and I would end up with bad stomach aches and gas anyway.
I'm now a vegan. and can attest to lots of wonderful dairy subsititutions and alternatives.
my favorite cream cheese substitute for making traditional cheese cake is tofutti (since I'm vegan I do it egg free as well, and it comes out awesome, nonvegans love it even more than other cheese cakes they have had)
I love mimic-cream whipped cream (and I found out about it from a non-veg woman who said her very picky husband said it was the best whipped cream ever)
there are lots of wonderful nut milks and great nogs out there as well (even tastier than mainstream nog)
tofutti makes a sourcream that tastes amazing in a layered mexican dip of refried beans and salsa.
daiya and follow your heart makes some killer cheezes too. for pizza and lasagna
and there is some awesome recipes for cheese sauces out there that knock the socks off of everyone, nacho cheese and things like that.
and although mayo is dairy free, I like veganaise and to save money I found a recipe that works in replicating the taste and texture.
and there are many more alternatives and substitutes for diary and eggs out there. I have found a way to make all my favorite dishes from my childhood, and seriously there is a way to replicate everything. including meats, poultry and fish.
That's great! I didn't know there were so many options out there. I am feeling slightly less depressed about having to give up some of my favorites. lol. I'm going to the store later and expect I will discover all sorts of things now. I will keep the brands you mentioned in mind so I can try the best first. lol. Thanks again!
earth balance makes a great tasting butter.
This site will help you http://www.peta.org/living/vegetarian-living/accidentally-vegan.aspx and so will this one http://godairyfree.org/
You can even have cheese cake made out of cashews, seriously tastes like cheese cake! A fav site of mine that I also like is http://www.affairsofliving.com/ I make the black bean fudge recipe off that site all the time. Another site to help you w/ menu planning is http://www.cookingallergyfree.com/users/login
I am not vegan but my kids and I have food allergies/sensitivities. dairy, egg, gluten, cane sugar, oranges, watermelon, cinnamon, nuts.DH is exploring doing more vegan foods to help him loose weight and I am thrilled about it, I have always wanted to eat more vegan things.
Awesome! Thank you so much! I think the ideas I am getting from here will help the general health of my entire family. :)
depending on where you live, you might have to go to a health food store or a wholefoods, or special order some things, there are so many very delicious traditionally dairy oriented foods that are made from nuts, seed or soy or rice or oats, etc. and they amazingly taste traditional as well, and usually even better than traditional made foods (although admitteedly some recipes are not as good as familar favorites, or some brands but that is true of all recipes and brands that include dairy from cows, some don't taste as good as others)

If you like a very subtle flavor of almonds, a variety of flavors and sugar contents, almond milk is a great replacement. I absolutely love it with cereal and it's light, clean taste, and sweetness (even the unsweetened variety has a slight natural sweetness... though I am amazingly sensitive to all things sugar related) make it easy to drink even right from the glass. The almond cheese products I've tried have also all been amazingly good considering there is no dairy in them ;) Good luck and have fun trying new stuff!
