I'm dina. I live in Centre County PA with my three kids and my husband. Zack was dx'd severe ASD a year ago at 22 months. He is currently getting OT,ST and DT 2 hours a week each and has 30 hours of Verbal Behavior, a form of ABA.
I created the momsversusautism.org website to help parents find resources and answers for our area. As I became more involved with cafemom I realized that more people all over the country needed more resources and I have been inspired by thousands of parents to join the fight against autism - its causes and its therapies.

  • Hi everyone,
My name is Dawn and I have 6 kids of my own, none of mine are special needs children, however, I have a home day care and I think that one of the children in my care may be at least mildly autistic.  She is almost 10 and doesn't really interact too well with children her own age. She will sit and read all day if I would let her.  she doesn't like to do any kind of sports.  She is an only child and I feel mom makes excuses for her not joining in.  She is also very stubborn/picky about food, there are only a few foods that she will even think about eating and she turns her nose up at all food even the foods she says she likes.   Could this be autism?  I want to be able to work with her but I feel that I may not get support from mom if I even bring up the subject of autism with her.  Also, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get her more active and involved?

    Thanks for listening

  • Hi, my name is Julie.  I have 2 little boys, Trevor who will be 4 in July and Tyler who is 7.    We live in the area of Tulsa, Ok.  I'm a stay at home mom and am married to a wonderful man named Todd.  Tyler was dx PDD-NOS at age 3 and started the early childhood program at the public school which was absolutely wonderful!  He received weekly therapy from a psychologist for 3 years, OT  1X weekly in school and 1X weekly privately.  He has speech at school 2x week.  This year, he stuggled terribly and was also diagnosed ADHD.  I was hesitant but did try some meds to help and he
is doing SO much better.  Tyler is very high functioning and since starting the meds he went from only tolerating 1/2 day of school and only in the spec. ed. room with an aid to extending his day to full day and integrated in reg. classroom 90 percent of the day with his aid.  We are thrilled and hope to continue to see progress.

  • Hi!  I'm Karen and I live in Northampton County, PA with my 3 children and husband.  My children are Anthony - 12 (turning 13 on July 18), Victor - 5, and Elizabeth - 11 mos old.  Anthony has a diagnosis of Asperger's and ADHD.  He was diagnosed at the age of 8.  I had basically thought I was missing something as a parent due to Anthony's behaviors.  It was not until I took him to our family doctor for a visit and he had a meltdown in front of the doc that it was suggested we get a developmental pediatrician evaluation.  He was 7 at that point, but we had to wait for over a year for an appointment, where we finally got the diagnosis.

Right now Anthony attends a small private Christian school where he will be going into 8th grade.  He goes to see a counselor once per week.  He had attended a social skills/pragmatic language group at Good Shepherd, but he "aged out" of that last year.  We also have him on some supplements after seeing  a DAN! doctor a month ago.  My husband and my father-in-law both are probably on the autism spectrum somwhere, although neither have been formally diagnosed.

I can't wait to meet everyone here.  Thanks so much Dina for the invitation!

  • I think I forgot to do this part....(:

I'm Autumn, and I think I know most of you already. But just in case we don't know one another yet, I have a 7 yr old boy with Asperger's Syndrome. I am an anthropologist and for the last year and a half, I have studied autism from both social and biological perspectives. Previously, all of my research was on social services, so hopefully I will be able to help Dina out here in her mission to connect parents and children with resources.

Oh...and I love our kids! Love them, love them!

  • Hello ladies. I am mom to a beautiful 12yr old girl with autism, Bianca, and a 4yr old neurotypical little boy Anthony. They give me the opportunity to be both a regular mom and a special mom, but mostly they both make me a proud mom. Married 13yrs, some happy and some yrs I've blocked out .
We live in Lodi, NJ. I've seen a couple of moms here from Jersey, but it seems we are so spread out all over the state
