I'm dina. I live in Centre County PA with my three kids and my husband. Zack was dx'd severe ASD a year ago at 22 months. He is currently getting OT,ST and DT 2 hours a week each and has 30 hours of Verbal Behavior, a form of ABA.
I created the momsversusautism.org website to help parents find resources and answers for our area. As I became more involved with cafemom I realized that more people all over the country needed more resources and I have been inspired by thousands of parents to join the fight against autism - its causes and its therapies.

  • I'm Amy, and I'm living in Kansas as of July 21. (We're moving from Iowa.) My youngest, Josh, is 8 and was diagnosed with autism when he was 3. He was in an autism program through the public school system, and has made wonderful progress, even being partially mainstreamed with an aide. His verbal skills are getting better every day. My husband and I are very concerned, though, with our move to Kansas (it's job-related), because we're moving to a small town in the southeast part of the state and there is no public school autism program nearby. His IEP and last year's evaluation both say he needs specialized instruction, but I'm afraid the school district and the special ed cooperative which serves multiple districts and counties is going to try to say, "Tough luck." HELP!!! Do we have the right to demand that they start a program (he ISN'T the only PDD kid in the area, I'm sure) or transport him to the nearest one? Why should he be denied what PDD kids in Wichita and Kansas City (both about 75 miles away) get? Without this type of programming, I'm afraid he won't make the progress he could, which would be a crime. He loves school now.

  •   Hi.
I am Colleen and I have an adopted daughter, Angelina who is 3 and was diagnosed PDD-NOS and SID at 18 months. She has brought us together as a family and we work really well together. We all share the sorrow and yes, the joy of having a special kid. I live in North Central NJ and we are actively involved in ABA, speech, and all sorts of alternative therapies, such as Music, Movement, and whatever else our Therapeutic Center can come up with. I love trying new things, because you never know what is going to work, right?!
I am happy to be able to share my experiences and learn from all of yours. I can also help with starting therapy groups in your area as I have learned from our center how to go about doing that. I am happy to be a part of this group. Our strength is in our numbers and in our commitment to helping our children.

  • Hi, we're from NYC. My daughter started EI at 3 yrs old and my son at age 2. Glad they got into that early. Their father is a deadbeat and I'm glad he's not around. Don't have much support from other family outside of a few pats on the back. My own father is around but is horrible at giving emotional support. So that's why I'm here. It is almost like therapy visiting this site!

I'm a single mom of Princess Dee,11 yrs old and Prince Lex,9 yrs old. Both are autistic and verbal.

  •  My name is Glennie Campbell (AKA Patches) and I live in Downingtown PA. This is a pic of my 34 yr. old son, who last year was finally diagnosed correctly. He has Asperger's Syndrome. He's been misdiagnosed his whole life, in and out of trouble with law, due to illness and lack of understanding. Problem is, he was diagnosed by a therapist and NEVER was seen by a psychiatrist. (I take that back, he saw one for 10 mins. for a diagnosis, and he said he was fine. Yeah Right. He was MY Dr. and should have had more insite than seeing a stranger from my sessions! How can you diagnose someone in that short of time????) This therapy was court ordered, but again the system has failed us. Now the place he wa going to is closed and we don't know where to go for help. He feels there is nothing wrong with him and meds. mess him up. He had so many meds. over the years that were wrong..... I can't really blame him. It was court ordered because I got a PFA (protection from abuse) against him as a last result for help when he threatened my life during one of his fits. But, the time on it is about up. It was a different hearing than the Judge was use to hearing.(And was greatful for the learning experience. Usually these hearing are for people who want nothing to do with the other and are afraid. Mine was because I love my son and need help; I had no other place to turn to, and thought we finally got it, but the SYSTEM let us down AGAIN. Not the judge he did his part.)  I LOVE my son and want to enjoy him, but this has been a wedge between us due to frustration on both sides. PLEASE, is there help out there for us?????? They wont even give him his SSI (he had when younger) because he wasn't seen by a Dr. Larry lives 2 1/2 hrs. from me now since I've married (pic is from my reception which he DJd for us.), which helps lessen the stress for us, but I'm still running 2 homes.( My husband is an Angel and tries to help anyway he can, but we need State Help). I need HELP getting him the help he needs.
Thanks for reading and any help you can give.
    Lord be with you

  • Hello, my name is Rita and I have 6 beautiful kids. I have two boys (Miguel Marcus) who have autism. Both of my boys were diagnosed around 3yrs old. My oldest son is Antonio who is 7, Aaliyah 4, Quentin 3, D'Angelo 2 . Technically, Miguel is diagnosed with severe autism which in turn can be very mind boggling for me becuase he is non-verbal too. When their b-days come, we always try to invite family, but initially the boys aren't always socially interested, except with their siblings. I am always trying to find different resources into their disability. Both of my boyys receive speech 3x, physical 3x, and occuptational 2x during school hours, with an aide!! We live in Manlius,NY where we bought a house!!
