Did your Doc. order a MRI for your kid on the Spectrum? If so,why? Is there a need?

Actually, after his EEG, they did order one. But since his EEG came back fine, and he had already been through (what I considered) to be enough...we canceled it.

He has a doctor...a therapist...and is on meds.. He has Aspergers and Bi-polar.

I thought the same too( his EEG-Neg. also)
So, WHY did they want to DO the MRI to exactly find?

Well, he had an accident a few years ago...prior to his dx, and even though his EEG was okay...given his history, and his autism...they were probably wanting to do it just to be safe, and cover their own butts!

MRI study was done for a few reasons. Zack seemed to be having small seizures and staring spells. He also was holding his head a lot. We wanted to get one for the size of his head too. Most kids on the spectrum have larger heads, Zack's is smaller than normal, 10-25% - its always been that way. When they did the MRI all was fine except for a tumor/cyst growth inside of the bone marrow of his skull right in the front above his eyes. We are checking it every 6-12 months for changes in growth.

Doc just called... It is my choice, of course, to have it done. He wants to see a clear picture of his brain and that's basically it. I will have to discuss the sedation options with the doc. and nurse who will be doing the procedure. Most of all the procedure Does Not HURT. I am just concerned with anything relatd to sedation.

Well, My Madeline is getting one too, her EEG was also normal.  The doctor wanted to see if there was anything "deeper" causing my daughter's problems with falling all the time.  They "think" it is only low muscle tone, but they want to rule out some neurological problems.  Has your son had a speech regression?? Sometimes regressions can be caused by things other than autism (don't ask me what, LOL, I am only repeating what the neurologist told me).

Best of luck!!  I am looking forward to my daughter's being over and done with

well, the first time I saw Zacky go under sedation it was hard. He struggled a little bit ang then went limp. He looked like a little angel breathing into a mask and I cried. For the next hour I was walking the hospital halls and holding Justin's hand (my husband). when Zack woke he was disoriented and very dry-mouthed. that went away after we gave him water and juice. He even ate an icepop. HE HATED BEING HOOKED UP to the machines and wanted to rip them off. But all in all it was ok. Good luck and keep us posted. :)

Hi EVERYONE! Well.. We got there at 6:45 AM. Won't do that again... We got there and they had all the paperwork, etc. . We sit until 7 am when myself and 2 other moms with kids went to the MRI/Surgery Area.  We go first as we had a 7:30 MRI. I talk to the anesthesiologist( sp?) and she explains what will happen and I sign my consent. Then we go to the room with the sedation equipment. She asks Hal if he likes Bubble Gum and he says. " Bubble Gum? I don't like that Bubble Gum!" LOL So, she tried to put the mask on his face with the scent of gum and he was NOT having that! So we did hold him down and he cried some and then next thing I know he was out. I was scared!
He was so limp. She assured me that he was OK and that they would start the IV and see me in a little while.  I went to try to eat and then made some business calls, etc. Then I hear his name called over the P.A. System!  !!Yikes!!, so I run to the phone. Could NOT remember the page number so I called the Operator. Then I got thru and they said he was out of the MRI and OK. He slept for an hour ; drank some ginger ale; we went home.. So, long story short.  Have it done!  Not as bad as I feared...just pray!
