I have a yummy recipe for roasted red pepper hummus, which (of course) calls for tahini. I'm having a hard time finding it in my area. Do I really need to use it in my hummus? I'm guessing it is used to bind the chickpeas and other ingredients (?). Is there anything else I can use, or just eliminate it altogether? I'm afraid to try it and possibly wasting the ingredients on an experiment! LOL!
Thanks again for your help!!
I'm sorry sister, Hummus without Tahini is not Hummus. it's like making fettucini shrimp without the fettuccine sauce.
try your local grocery store, in the international or whole foods isle. brookshire here carries it, and I remember Kroger and Albertson carry it as well. it is called sesame paste. hope you find it.
on a side note, I never heard of a roasted red pepper hummus. living most of my life in Jordan , Hummus is an essential part of breakfast. and it is basically chick peas, tahini, lemon, garlic , cumin and salt. that's it. any other hummus would sound and taste strange to me ( or any Jordanian/ palestinian for that matter LOL) people in our area get some type of hummus dip from sam's with different falvors. I never felt like trying it. LOL though I love trying new foods . but Hummus for me is something not to be messed with. ( I know, I'm crazy.. but what can you do?
)

Thanks for putting the need for tahini in hummus into perspective! I am Hispanic and there are traditional dishes in our culture that you do not mess with, either! I wince when I see TV chefs creating exotic infusions out of a simple arroz con pollo. My husband is the same way; he is from North Africa,where couscous is a beloved staple food. He literally gets grossed out seeing couscous mixed with various ingredients that, he feels, does not belong. I will check Kroger. Thanks again!
I have to agree with the previous answer dear, Tahini is a essential ingredient in homuus, now if you can not find the tahini or sesame paste you can make your own,
4 cups sesame seeds more or less
aprox 1/4 to 1/2 cup olive oil
preheat oven to 350 degrees and place the sesame seeds on a baking pan and place them in the oven, turn with a wooden spoon every 2 min or so for about 10 min till the seeds are golden but not toasted dark or burnt
Place the seeds in a food processor or blender add 1/4 cup olive oil and blend till smooth if you need to add more olive oil then do so
It's that simple so if you cant find the tahini or paste in a local store then I know you can find the sesame seeds especially in the asian food isle or your spice isle........
Hope this helps
now I have also heard of people making hommus without the tahini by adding cumin or sesame seeds but to be honest with you I have never tried it nore do I think it would give the same results with the cumin I mean ......Good luck dear
