Extended Breastfeeding Mothers
I am now 8 weeks pregnant with number 2. I was on the depo shot so it was a big (wonderful) suprise. I am still BFing but am thinking I may need to stop. My issue is only uses it during the day 2 times before each of her naps. But the problem is at night. She is waking up 4-6 times a night to "nurse". I am SO TIRED!!! She also sleeps with me most of the night. If she would sleep through the night I would LOVE to continue and BF both my kids. My question is, any suggestions on weaning or getting her to sleep through the night?

by Mammalia on Aug. 4, 2008 at 1:51 PMI'm not sure I have advice for you, since I'm such a heavy sleeper at night, I don't even notice when my daughter nurses. I'm sure she does because my breasts are incredibly empty in the morning, and if she wasn't nursing they'd be full. So we have no problem with night nursing because it doesn't affect my sleep. We co-sleep as well so I guess my daughter has just figured out how to get her nurse-on without disturbing us. Lots of practice I guess. As a member of this group, you can probably guess that I wouldn't recommend weaning at her age, as I see plenty of benefits to keep nursing, even if she eats a lot of other foods. However, I don't think a sleep deprived mother is a healthy mother, and children deserve healthy, happy mothers. So, if you decide to wean because you're exhausted, then I'd highly recommend doing it gradually and as gentle on her as you can. The night nursing will probably be the last hurtle. Start with the daytime nursing because it will be easiest to distract her. I hope you do get some great advice though, and I'm sorry I can't be much of a help. More so, I hope you find what works, and you get a full nights sleep soon. Best of luck -alia |

by lesann on Aug. 18, 2008 at 10:00 AMI had the same problem w/ my dd she would nurse a lot @ night & I would not get any sleep. I finally moved her into her bed @ when she was around 10 months. If she would wake & cry for longer than a certain amount of time I'd go up to her room & nurse her then put her back in her crib. It's not easy, but she is sleeping much better most of the time. There are times when she will not go back to bed in her crib because she's uncomfortable ( teething) or something & I take her back to bed w/ me. Now on a good night she'll sleep till 5 or so. Some nights are worse than others. Good Luck!
