Choosing Not to Vaccinate
the freaking emergency room!!!!!
ds fell a whole step at daycare the other day, and managed to fly in such a way as to slam hhis temple so hard into a baby gate to develop a three inch goosegg and send his providers in a frenzied... well... panic.
i brought himn to the er. while taking his vitals, the nurse asked about vaccines. i told her we were delaying them for at least a couple of years (*cough* refusing all vaxes *cough*) and i watched her chart in the MIDDLE of the page (think prescription) "voluntarily delaying vax". which has nothing to do with forgetting the bottom step. nothing. and will be in his chart. which goes into a computer. forever. wtf???
thats like going to the er and saying "i think i boke my hand" and they ask about botox.
stupid.

by DeathMetalMommy on Sep. 5, 2008 at 1:10 AMI took my son into the ER cause he had a 101.2 tamp and they asked if he had his vac's and I said no, so this fricken nurse starts telling me how I am going to kill my son and that the things on tv are lies and blah blah blah. Then he proceed to tell me that I will feel really bad when I kill my son and that I was a bad parent. EXCUSE FRICKEN ME, my son is sick fix him and let me go. I love my son with all my heart. That is why I am waiting. |

by MamaCass on Sep. 5, 2008 at 1:18 AMugh... When I did my rotation in the triage of ER there was a nurse there who read the "chief complaint" which was "possible whooping cough." Her response was, "um yeah, so not likely..YOU WERE VACCINATED HONEY!" I replied, "I had whooping cough when I was 19 so it can happen." Her response: "what did your parents not believe in vaccines?" I replied, "No, I was fully vaccinated but even the pro-vaccine community will admit that it is a failure as a vaccine. It was my little contribution to inflict knowledge. Who knows if it stuck. I guess I am trying to say, they don't know everything. Don't beat your self up. It is not even their fault. They are guided by nursing school and they only teach what the FDA, CDC, WHO, and APA recommend. The problem is with them. |

by elfwolfe on Sep. 5, 2008 at 1:55 AMI feel ya, the last time I took dd to the ER, they asked if she was vax'ed, and I said no, they came back with "well, since she isnt vax'ed, we need to get a urine sample, and to do that we need to put a catheder in her" I asked them why, they responded "its common practice to rule out anything else that is causing her illness". I found out after the fact that this was nothing but a lie! Boy was I hot!!! Never again will I allow them to do anything to her without a valid medical reason! Now, if I can help it, I avoid the ER. |

by V8Momma on Sep. 5, 2008 at 6:56 AMThey ask: "Is she up to date on vaccines?" I answer "yes" - she IS as far as I'm concerned. She has received all the vaxes that I say she is to have. If there is an injury, they don't need to know if she's had her MMR or varciella. They're just scouting for more ways to make money if it's not related to the childs immediate care. |

by scattycarrot on Sep. 5, 2008 at 11:28 AMI am an ER nurse (well, I am a SAHM right now!) and it wasn't until I became pregnant and found out that they give Hep B at birth that my eyes were opened. Prior to that I had NO idea about the truth of vaccines. At nursing school (and I am sure, medical school), we are just taught that vaxs are the be all and end all and that they are responsible for the eradication of communicable diseases. I always thought anti-vaxers were a bit wacko, to be honest, as that is what I was taught. I just took the information they gave me and had no reason to question it. I am not excusing my previous ignorarance or that of the nurses we are talking about here, its just that the medical profession is extremely biased and only teaches one side of the story. I was just as guilty as all the nurses or doctors that you are talking about. I am so grateful that my head is out of the sand. I know that if I have ever got to take my LO to urgent care or the ER (and I pray that I don't), that the response I get from the staff there will be the same as you are all reporting but you see, I now have knowledge on my side and knowledge is power. I will do my best to educate and spread the word. |
