Thinking of Moving to Louisiana

Hey y'all, I'm Ashlee and I'm 25 and currently live in West Virginia.  Grew up in Virginia and lived in North Carolina for a little over a year.  I've been married to my HS Sweet Heart since 2005, got married at 19!  We've got 2 little boys, our youngest just turned 1 in Oct and our oldest just turned 4 Dec. 2nd.

We're planning a BIG move this year.  I can not bear to leave the South, because I've never lived anywhere else!  My Husband hasn't either, so we've compiled a list of a few states we'd like to move to.

One of them is, obviously, Louisiana!  I was wondering if y'all could give me some information about the state and what it's like to live there.  Everything I've found online makes it sound like the worst place ever to live, with the worst crime.  They make it sound like you'll get mugged going to the bus stop with your kids every morning.

Also, what parts of Louisiana should we check out?  Where would be a good place to live with two little boys.  We're a young family.  My Husband like outdoorsy things, fishin' and huntin' and riding 4-wheelers etc. all that.  What are some safe towns with good schools that I can check out and where my babies would enjoy growing up and my Husband would have stuff to do and where I could be close-ish to shopping etc.  lol  We live an hour away from a Wal-Mart or Movie Theater right now, so even a 30 minute drive to shopping etc. would be better.  haha

Thanks in advance girls!

The whole state is not as bad as many make it out to be. It just depends what part of the state you want to live. Put it this way, where I grew up we always locked our doors but where my husband grew up they often still do not lock their doors. It sounds like you would probably want to live more towards the middle or north of the state and probably wouldn't care to live in a city type atmosphere, if you move here. I know that Kenner and Meterie are pretty good family areas, lots to do, lots of shopping, but I don't think they have much in the way of outdoors. I know that Lafitte has a lot in the way of outdoors but they're kind of isolated and you would have to drive a little bit to get to a Walmart or the movies. But I think you would probably like it around Baton Rouge or the areas above Lake Pontchartrain maybe. The truth is I don't know about the more northern parts of the state. I would really love to go visit the rest of the state but I haven't yet. I grew up in Gretna and now live in Marrero and the most north that I've visited in my own state is Baton Rouge. I hope I helped. Oh, and word of advice, no matter where you finally decide to move make sure you look up the area/neighborhood on the Sex Offender website to see how many are registered there. My little neighborhood has no registered sex offenders but there were a shocking 130 registered sex offenders within a two mile radius of my home the last time I checked. So, like HGTV says, "location, location, location".

There are bad parts of every state.  Anywhere you go its like that.  But there are some great areas in LA... Check out St. Tammany parish.  It is SE Louisiana, on the northshore of lake pontchartrain... Tons of stuff to do, outdoors and all.

If you are considering to move around New Orleans..Harahan & River Ridge are pretty safe areas, infact theres even a walmart right down the road :p.  I have grown up in Jefferson parish, so take it from me :)
