So I know your photo is good, but is it marketable?

Alright, so in stock photography there are a few extra guidelines that should be followed when you are taking a picture.  All of the other rules apply, i.e. rule of thirds, exposure, etc. but there are some added.  The formula is this.

P=B+P+S+I

This stands for PICTURE equals BACKGROUND plus PERSON(S) plus SYMBOL plus INVOLVEMENT.

The Background:  Choose it wisely.  It can mean the difference between a sale and no sale.  It should be noticeable but unobtrusive and NOT CLUTTERED.

Person(s):  Well, you need people in the shot most of the time but not posed portraits.  These people must be engrossed in doing or observing something.

Symbol:  Anything that brings an idea to mind is a symbol or icon.  Include an appropriate symbol to make your photograph more effective.

Involvement:  The people in your photo should be the subject of the picture (showing enjoyment, unhappiness, fear, and so on); or should be interacting or working with something.  They should be absorbed in this activity or in watching it.

Here is an example photograph that I took that I feel has all of these elements:

Ooo I really like that photo.  If you had somebody chillin on the porch it would be really great for stock, but I def think you could get by with some travel mags or books with this shot.
