Your cild may be keeping his/her sadness hidden if he/she:

  • doesn't mention the separation or the fact that the other parent is not around.
  • seems overly eager to help you.
  • often writes notes or makes statements to the efffect "I'm here for you" or "I'll always love you.,"
  • seems not to care if parents fights or if one misses a scheduled visitation.
  • shows a general lack of emotion.
  • is less enthusiastic about people, things, and activities he/she enjoyed before.
  • suddenly shows an attraction to sad movies, books, or news stories.

Gently broach the topic of sadness and explain that it's normal and even healthy to feel sad over the situation.  These kinds of statements give children complete permission to express their sadness.  Make sure they know you will always help them with any of thier feelings.
