What to Do

Hello everyone,

I have an issue that i just dont know what to do about.  My son and I just moved from a wonderful neighborhood where i have been for the last 12 years of my life. I raised my children there. well recently i was forced to move due to financial difficulties.I am a single mom now and i only have the one child at home now( the other two are grown with lives of their own). Where we have moved to is very different from what my son is used to. He was enrolled in  the public school here but it just has not worked out well for him. this is when i had decided to home school him, we are both excited about his change and he is very relieved that he doesn't have to go back. I also have enrolled in school because i thought that i was going to receive help from his dad, but things have changed, and I need very badly to  go to school myself, so that we can get away from this neighborhood and do better, but i also know that homeschooling him is the right decision. My son is only 9 years old and 2 days out of the week i will be out of the home for  about 6 hours. i have tried daycares but they only take children up to preschool during the day. I was thinking about just taking him with me to college and letting him do his work there while i am in class, i dont have anyone to watch him so i dont know what to do at this point. any advice?

I'm in college and they won't let me take my oldest, 9, because of liabilty issues..I would def check first. Have you thought about trying to get scholarships so he could go to private school? There is one here in Florida called step up for kids(or students?) not sure exact name but it helps A LOT. Also most schools you can get financial aide to help as well..good luck I wish I could home school mine at times.

Hi and welcome to the group.

Have you tried to find a local sitter who might take him in for those hours.  Or start a co-op for your child's age, where as you sit for them for so many hours and they will sit so many hours.

Is there any charter school or any private schools that would base it on your income? Also, I was homeschooled. Look online, see if there are homeschool groups. We went on fieldstone and had activities so we could have friends and Mom's had support. You could look into a tutor or something for when you are in class.

Maybe try emailing your professors in advance?  You could also run an ad in your campus paper and see if you can find someone who is willing to exchange tutoring services for childcare those days.  If they have a child also, you could see about exchanging childcare.

Will your college allow your son to sit in the back of the room while you attend classes?  If not, maybe another home-schooling family in the area would be happy to help out (think co-op) or trade sitting with you.

OOhhhh I am so frustrated right now i could just blow my top! this is Gyasi's first year being homeschooled and so i am trying to make sure everything happens on schedule. yeah right I had everything sent  and verified to his schoolConnections academy, all i needed was his third grade test state test scores, well his previous school was supposed to fax them over with his withdrawal summary, guess what , it;s supposed to be the first day of school for him and we have no supplies what so ever.why uou ask? because the previous school secretary decided that it wasn't a priority to send my son's paper in a timely fashion. So after hounding her for days she finally has sent them but now i receive a notice from the school that they were sent but the paper was not centered when sent so all the info cannot be read. So  i call her and her response is that school has started now so she is  ultra busy but feel free to come and pick up to send myself. So i have to leave classesx early on my first day of school so i can take the bus to the school to pisk up paperwork then try to make it to the library on the bus before it closes to have the paper faxed then it's going to take another week for them to verify the scores to complete his enrollment.so he's already starting behind. On a better note today is my first day back to college after all these years and i am estatic!
