"Moms" Versus "Mothers"

There's nothing wrong with the word per se. It's just that when that's ALL we call ourselves, it seems to me to trivialize the experience of mothering. In my younger years, we were all "mothers." I remember a little magazine from Venice, CA, called "MOMMA: The Organization for Single Mothers." Just my input. I think occasionally calling ourselves "Moms" is great. And, of course, using it as a term for you to address your child or your own mother is just fine.

Yeah no. I'll always be a MOM. Not a mother. My son only calls me Mother when's he's being a smartass teenager. I rarely refer to my mom as Mother. Way too formal for us. Mother seems like someone who wants distance from her kids. Just my input.

I think it's like the dad vs father thing IMO. A mother is anyone that gives birth but a mom is the one that is there for and raises their kids

I agree with the other moms. I'm not "mother". I'm Mommy or Mama. It's a more endearing term. Where Mother is formal, distant, and sometimes bitter sounding.

I am mama or mommy or when we are being silly I am Elmo (family nickname not for red puppet either lol) I am a mother genetically and a mama in all other sense of the word. I'm sure that when teenage scary starts mother will be a term said more often. But not yet!

I don't use mom or mother, I use Ama.  My kid calls me mommy or Ama.  I wouldn't use mother, I would use mom.

I agree with the pps. My son is speech delayed. He doesn't say mama often. I would much rather hear mama than mother though. Mama just sounds more casual, comfortable, and loving.

I am called, ''mama'' or ''mommy''  I would never want to be called mother..it seems so cold and without feeling.
