What type of assistance are you talking about?

It's hard to make it with small kids without family or a support network. I moved away from my parents when my youngest was 2 and ended up moving back. I tried again when they were 12 and 8 and did better.

I live in the Denver area and find it to be easy enough.  There is a lot of assistance, depending on the county you reside in and more options for schooling as well.
