CafeMom Mother's Day Party!
Here's a look back at how the Entertainment industry has portrayed moms through the years, and how far we've come to actually have a realistic portrayal on our screens.
1950s
June Cleaver – Leave it to Beaver
June was the poster 50s mom and wife. She kept a perfect home and even vacuumed in a dress, heels and pearls. She was always there to greet her husband when he came home from work with a kiss, and dinner on the table.
1960s
Laura Petrie – The Dick Van Dyke Show
Laura was one-half of the perfect parental relationship. She and husband, Rob, were a happy couple, very much in love with each other. They spent quality time together and with their son and made decisions together.
1970s
Carol Brady – The Brady Bunch
Carol was also the picture perfect mom/wife. She took care of the home and was there to support her husband when he got home from work. Carol and Mike Brady also portrayed a parenting team and made most major parenting decisions together.
Ann Romano – One Day at a Time
Ann was one of the first TV portrayals of a divorced/single mom. Feeling as if she'd always been someone's daughter, wife, or mother, she divorced her husband, got a job and moved her daughters into the city to "find herself."
1980s
Clair Huxtable – The Cosby Show
Clair was one of the first strong career woman/mother role model we saw on TV. Clair and husband Cliff, made important parenting decisions together, she was always there for her kids, and had a successful career as an attorney. She was the SuperMom who had it all.
1990s
Cindy Walsh – Beverly Hills, 90210
Cindy was the mild-mannered, understanding mom who was always there for her husband and children. She suffered a move from Minneapolis to self-obsessed Beverly Hills and all of her children's (mostly her daughter's) teenage drama. She never yelled, always understood and was always right.
2000s
Kirsten Cohen – The OC
Kirsten was a wealthy career woman living the ideal life in a huge home in one of the most picturesque locals every portrayed on TV. She was a caring mother who discussed situations with her husband, but left most of the hard disciplining to him. Maybe because they had sons. While she wasn't portrayed as the typical wealthy, society mom, she still had some problems and suffered with alcoholism, but never abandoned her family.
