I am having this procedure done in July and am very scared and sad. Is there anyone who has been through this before and can let me know that it will be alright? Thanks in advance for any offer of insight, support, etc. It just seems that even though I have two BEAUTIFUL & HEALTHY children and know that my uterus and ovaries shouldn't define my Womanhood, a big part of me is going away forever.

You should expect a minimal of scarring as likely the procedure will be done vaginally.   They may need to make a 1 to 2 stitch incision around the curve of your belly button, lol, you will be hard pressed to see this after it heals.   You will be told not to do any heavy lifting for 6 to 8 wks and after 2 or 3 weeks you will be so bored and feel so normal you will not want to heed this but you better!  Your libido should not be effected!  As with all surgical procedures obviously there are risks involved!  The anesthesiologists should go over with you any prior bad experiences with the "sleep" process.

Now here is the biggy!  You need to be sure this is appropriate for you.  Unlike a tubal ligation there is no going back from this procedure!  Also you should consider an incomplete hysterectomy  meaning leave you ovaries intact to continue your bodies natural hormone flow.

And yes be sure and ask your physician anything!  There are no stupid questions!  Stupid is not asking!   Good Luck......... I am extremely pleased with my hysterectomy!!!  Good bye periods forever!!!!

I had a complete hysterectomy in October. I am occasionally saddened when I think I can never make babies again, but I am older adn already have five children. As for my health, the hysterectomy was the best thing I could have done. I was having so much pain and problems and was msierable often, plus exhausted from losing so much blood. I would have it done again in a heartbeat. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I am much  older than you I am sure and  my complete  hystorectomy was  done  when I was 22 years old  due to cancer. They do it  all differently now, so that there isn't  such an unsightly scar as I have ...( FROM THE NAVEL DOWN)
Be sure to talk everything over with your   Dr. Ask lots of  questions  and let him know about the fears you have. Most  Dr's  will be glad to answer all your questions and  put your fears to rest.
Just remember that you are  not defined by your   lack of ovaries. You are a WOMAN and  a MOTHER and  you are  above all else a  person. Hang in there and  take it from  me , I don't miss  the  problems I had or the pain I was in each and every day. Thankfully I was able to  have  2 healthy children before  they  did my surgery.
Be sure to talk to your  DR  about  replacement  hormone therapy and the risks and benefits of it. I go the natural route   myself  due to the  fact that I had cancer.  Get  all the info you can online and have your question ready.
Good luck  and  Take care.

I had a emergency hyst. in December 2007. And although a little confusing to navigate...hystersisters.com has a wealth of information. Just know your options, ask a million questions to your doctor, and don't go under the knife until you feel peace about getting it done. I don't know your situation but look into other procedures that may have the same effect. I am 35 yo. I didn't have many chioces because of my situation. I had a full hysterectomy, but the doctor was able to save on of my ovaries (no hormones). He had to cut me from hip bone to hip bone because I had to have my bowel and bladder walls repaired. If I would have realized he was going to cut me like that I would have had a tummy tuck at the same time! What is odd about the whole thing is I had this surgery because I had cancer...the surgery was very redical, but I had very little pain afterward, and I was up and walking the same day. my baby was 2 at the time and I was able to take care of her after 3 weeks. The hardest part was feeling better. It took me a lot longer feel good...It was the change in hormones. God bless you!

Greetings! (The first paragraph is in regards my surgeries, so skip to the second paragraph, if you choose, but it does pertain to my sad goodbyes.)

WARNING:  VERY LONG REPLY BELOW ...

I totally understand your worry, and your sense of having to say "goodbye" to organs that you've "owned" since birth, or, actually, before birth.  I never had a hysterectomy, but I did have something very, very similar; however, I still feel the bite of sadness whenever I talk or write about it, so I won't, at this time.  I'll just say this, I'm absolutely fine, and we are now trying to have another child, which is SO exciting to all of us (hubbs, "big brother", and I)!

Even though I never had a hysterectomy, my mother has, and she came through the surgery with "flying colors."  In fact, she loved being in the hospital so, so, so much that she really wanted to stay there.  She healed fine, and was back to work (the job she loved) within a very short period of time (which was awesome for her).

Also, the main thing that she loved about this entire procedure is the fact that she did not have a menses anymore, and that was truly wonderful to her.  Yep, she no longer had to wear pads, tampons, and/or ruin her underclothes due to unexpected bleeding.  So, with all that being said, and I being the observer during this procedure, I think she is very happy with it.

I have to say one more thing about hysterectomies.  Obviously, she had hers done a long, long, long time ago, and they didn't have all of the updated ways of doing these surgeries, so she was cut open, which led to a longer hospital stay, but, like I said, she didn't mind.  So, if you're getting one of those "fancy" surgeries, you might be in for a nice surprise.  You may have a much easier healing time, and a lot less pain, etc.  My mother had many limitations when she was released, and, even though she didn't have much pain, she couldn't drive for six weeks, and could only be a passenger after so much time elapsed, I think ... It's been so long)!

I wish you the best of luck, and thank God you had your children already!  I know women who have had this surgery in their twenties, and thirties.  Thank God these women already had children, but my friend (still quite young) got remarried, and even though she had two from her previous marriage, she couldn't have any with her new partner.  I found that to be very sad, and I think she did/does too.

Okay, The Book Is Done ... The End,  (I hope this helps!)

I actually just had my hysterectomy done May 6th. But I also had to have complete pelvic reconstruction, which it ended up making  the surgery 4 1/2 hrs long. I have alot of health issues (chronic pain, ehlers-danlos syndrome, poly peripheral neuropathy, muscular deterioration, rhematoid & osteo arthritis etc.....) They had a really hard time getting my pain under control because of the position that they had my legs in (for that length of time). The hysterectomy part was not a problem. That was a breeze. The rest of the surgery was almost too much to bear.
As far as the hysterectomy goes, You should be fine. Do you know how the surgery is going to be done? Mine was vaginal. That is the best way if possible. I will keep in my prayers. Take care and please keep me posted.
Sincerely,
Shonna

Hello,  I agree with everything everyone has told you.  I was 27 when I had a partial hysterectomy done because of a prolapsed uterus (means it was falling out)  I'm 41 now; just now feeling some premenaposal things.   make sure you follow all instructions and I can tell you from experience you will still be a complete woman in your partners eyes ( I struggled with that, but when I talked to him he made me feel good).

You're in all of our prayers, pm me anytime.

Hey there, I had a vaginal hysterectomy when I was 32 (5 years ago this past May)due to prolapsed uterus.  They left my ovaries.  My procedure was done totally vaginally so there were no scars anywhere on my abdomen.  I could not drive, lift or do pretty anything for 6 weeks.  I knew I was finished having children so my procedure has been a blessing due to the fact that I was pretty much in pain all the time.  Just talk to your physician about all of your worries and concerns.  I have told everyone that has asked me about this procedure that if you are sure you are finished having children than it is the best procedure that a women can have.  No more periods!!!!
