I can't stand it. Barkley has this fishy smell every now and then. I have no idea what it is. My only thought is that maybe it is anal glands. He is fixed and has been since he was six months old. I have had male dogs( alwasys neutered) in the past and have never had to address an anal gland issue. I guess I wondered if this could be it because I have heard that it is a stinky smell. It isn't all the time that I smell it-but when it stinks-IT REEKS! Does anyone know anything about this? I don't think it is gas because I am quite familiar with that stink. This smells like old fish.
anal glands have a smell all their own. very musky....and i mean VERY musky!
is that fishy smell when barkley's hot or been outside for a bit? that fishy smell normally comes from their skin....could be ears though....
some dogs just get an intermittent odor like that. they make special odor control shampoos for it.
if you can detect it coming from the ears, you might want to consult your vet. could be an infection.
I don't think he has an ear infection bc he was just to the vet Sat and the grromer Sun where his ears have been looked at and cleaned. I will have to see if there is any connection to being outside, but as far as I can say now-it is just a random smell. Do neutered dogs have to have the glands expressed or just unaltered dogs? I always forget to mention it to the vet when I am there. Peeeww! It really stinks though sometimes.

not all dogs need their glands expressed. altering doesn't make a difference either. littler dogs are more notorious for needing them done then bigger dogs. seems bigger dogs self express better when they poo.
i truly think if it were anals, you would be more disgusted by the odor. it's not really not a fishy smell.....more putrid. :o)
Our dane had eye surgery and the stress of the procedure made her let hers loose in the back seat of my car on the way home!!! OMG!!! I had to have the car professionally detailed and still, the odor lingered for months! Of course it was summer.....ya know....100+ degrees outside and can't roll down the windows! Needless to say, the air conditioner blasted full force and ALL windows were down for weeks getting back and forth to work!
Maybe the odor seems worse now cause of being pg?
Well, first , I hope you're feeling well... baby anytime now?
Secondly, I adopted a pug in April, so that Duff would have a brother to grow up with.
He is a lot of fun and loaded with personality. They are getting along very well... nearly inseperable.
I was unaware of this anal gland thing of which you speak.
Nor that small dogs have a ?? fairly common problem with it??
If thats the case, how do you know if they need help with it? and if they do, what DO you do??? Does it mean going to the vet everytime?
I hope not, because I can't afford that!
have you ever seen a dog "skootch" across the floor draggin' their butt? alot of times it's due to anal glands. they can express them this way.
if you get your dog bathed at a groomer, you can ask that they be done at that time. common practice.
i wouldn't worry unless you see dragging butts, or straining to poo. most, simply express them, themselves.
the groomer does it for no extra charge, normally. some places you have to ask to have it done. definitely worth the price of a bath and brush, to avoid that vet visit.
Thanks. I am feeling good although I need some patience because the waiting is driving me bananas. Your pug is adorable. They are a lot of dog in a little package, but so affectionate and smart. I love the new addition to your family-post more pics when you can.
